The Reigate Poisoning Case: Concluded by Hugh Ashton This is the second half of “The Reigate Poisoning Case”. The first half was written by Hugh Aston and published in Notes from the Dispatch-Box of John H Watson. This case is mentioned in passing by Watson in HOUN as the “Mme. Montpensier murder case.” In the first half of this story, some details did not match up to Watson’s record of the case in HOUN. The author stated as much in his introduction. This, the second half of the story; resolves that conflict in an interesting manner, which I will not spoil. I will say this. I try to do an honest review. If I don’t then I am of no value as a reviewer. This story is good. It is very good. But here’s the thing: it is only fifty-four pages long. There is a preview of The Death of Cardinal Tosca at the end of the book. It is a question of value. Why not make this novella part of an anthology? Or barring that, why not publish the first half of the tale along with the second half to make a full book length novel? I really think one of the two should have happened. But the story is great, so I’m only going to ding one star. The book gets four stars. Quoth the Raven…
