Gr 10 Up-Initially published in Italy, this title immediately drops readers into the middle of a complex and highly developed religion while providing no background information on Navajo life, tradition, or culture. Most of the ceremonial and religious terms used in the text are in Navajo with no pronunciation guides. English translations are generally provided once. Most readers will know practically nothing of this religion and will be hard-pressed to learn anything from this text. What makes this work unique among Native nonfiction titles are the photographs and paintings of modern life in the Navajo Nation. Despite this fact, the book's dense text and sometimes confusing statements make it an unnecessary purchase.-S K Joiner, Brazoria County Library System, Angleton, TX Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
