Thank you, Senator McCain, for your service to America as a Navy pilot and US senator. And thank you for educating this 68 yr old female Republican voter on the times' important national and international issues. I finally understand why we are present in Afghanistan and Iraq. I now know for sure that Putin is our evil enemy and the importance of the Middle East for the future of democracy worldwide. I am praying for you as you battle the insidious cancer that is Glioblastoma and I hold out hope that you can defeat it as my brother and my best friend were unable to do in the past 5 years . Everyone, regardless of political persuasion, should read this book.

Informative, philosophical, and reflective. The gentleman from Arizona explains the decisions he made. Whether we agree with them or not, he chose them in the belief that he thought would make America a better country for its citizens and its allies. As the song says, he has lived his life his way.

Senator McCain & I were shipmates on the USS Forrestal in the Vietnam war. I have traded letters several times with him over the years. He has done much over hi career to make the world a better place for humanity. Fair Winds & Following Seas, John. I will miss you.

Im 73 and am more interested in the politics of our country seeing the division that is presently taking place. Than ever before. As senator Mccain points out we must come together in support of humanitarian efforts to improve our nation and not be divided by political parties. And be aware of the undercurrent of evil that is infiltrating our society. We are one nation under God. Not putin. Not trump.

John McCain started this book before his serious cancer diagnosis and then decided to orally read for the audio book only the Introduction and Conclusion while he had the strength to do so. This 419-page 2018 book points to the higher values an exemplary America should have. The Restless Wave title comes from words in the Navy hymn stating that God’s arm hath bound the restless wave. In the 2008 Presidential Campaign, McCain’s aides suggested derogatory attacks on Barack Obama, but McCain never considered them. He wanted the campaign to instead be based on the merits. The financial meltdown in the months before the election greatly favored the newcomer and doomed McCain as a Republican. ` He favored Joe Lieberman for his Vice-Presidential candidate but was persuaded that this former Democratic (by then an Independent) choice would split the Republican vote. He could not afford alienation of the conservative wing of his Party. He then decided on Sarah Pailin to solidify that wing, and McCain was satisfied with her performance in the campaign. [Track 6 starting at 40 minutes. I purchased only the Nook audio download and thus cannot cite book pages; track references are instead used]. The book devotes extensive attention to water boarding and other unsavory treatments of suspected terrorists following the 9-11 attack. Americans treated those prisoners worse than the North Vietnamese did McCain and other American prisoners. In response to the argument that Taliban atrocities were worse, McCain responded that as an exceptional nation America should have much higher standards than the Taliban and even better than other nations’ treatment of war prisoners. [Tract 7]. When Hillary Clinton was a NY Senator and a member of the same committee as McCain, they travelled in a group to the Middle East. Contrary to what McCain had heard about her, Hillary was warm and engaging in their personal interaction. He had previously observed in the Senate that she was intelligent and hard working. In a briefing in the Middle East, she actively questioned a knowledgeable official who gave a detailed presentation of area issues. She keenly sought an understanding of the issues. [Tract 9].

Excellent read! I have followed John McCain for years and I've read two of his books-Faith of My Fathers and Thirteen Soldiers. John is a man who I respect and have enjoyed learning about his life. This book was well written, read fast and I found it hard to put down.
