This book marks the return of William Dalrymple as a writer. After a lackluster Nine Lives. Having read all his works, I would say this book stands out because of the use of a wide range of literary sources in many different languages. This tells the story of all the players of the Great game. The book weaves through all the twists and turns of plots and schemes that defined 19th century power play between the European powers and shows the battered and human face of the British East India Company. The books will satiate the historian as well as those seeking an exciting drama. I felt the author tried too hard to show parallels between old and the current situation in the Af pak region. nonetheless it is quite a brilliant book.

This is a terrific book. It is well researched and enlightening. It helps to understand how the West came to be involved in Afghanistan and the futility of getting out. Clearly, William Dalrymple deserves the awards his work has received.
