In 1942, a German U-boat sinks off the North Carolina coast. The survivors become prisoners of war, humiliatingly spending the remainder of World War II incarcerated in prison in Alva, Oklahoma. Sixty years later, the nine former German POWs hold a reunion near the site of where their ship exploded.

However, Joey DeMichael plans to kill the former sailors by planting a bomb at the reunion. While Joey puts his plan in motion, thirtyish Carolyn Baker searches records in a quest to uncover the identity of her biological parents. Instead she uncloaks Joey's plot. For the most part the FBI ignores Carolyn¿s plea, but Agent Martin Dunlevy heeds her entreaty and follows up on her findings. He soon is forced to protect Carolyn and her son from prominent individuals who desire that the secrets of the forties remain buried.

REUNION is an intelligent combining of a historical event with a modern day thriller. The story line is loaded with action even as it drifts back and forth between 1942 and the present. There are a few threads too many as debut author Curt Autry makes the rookie error of failing to live up to his first name and keep the plot curt. Still, the historical fictional account is powerfully written and the modern day cat and mouse chase is fun to follow. Mr. Autry has quite a career ahead of him if this novel is any indication of his talent.

Much by accident, I got my hands on an advanced review copy of this book, and absolutely loved it! The hook is a little known piece of history from WWII: a U-boat crew captured off the coast of North Carolina in 1942. 60 years later, the nine surviving crewmen gather in N.C. for a reunion, and are all killed when the Bed&Breakfast where they're staying goes up in flames! An FBI agent, whose personal & professional life is in a shambles, races against time to find the killer. At the same time, a young single, mother finds herself in that same race, but for very different reasons. The two eventually cross pathes in an explosive way and a very endearing relationship develops. This story seamlessly jumps back and forth between sins of the past and sins of the present, and the twists and turns build to a climax that I honestly didn't see coming. You really become engaged by these well-defined characters. My hope is, the author is smart enough to stick with them and develop a series of books around them (like Jonathan Kellerman's thrillers). If he does, I'll read every one of them!
