Chapter OneA Doctor-Designed Diet that Rescued Mom
May I have a dessert menu?
These are the shocking words I recently overheard an overweight woman ask her waitress. Why was I shocked? Because she had just devoured a gigantic plate of pancakes saturated with strawberry syrup and topped with a tall spire of whipped cream as her "dinner." Did I mention the quarter-pound of sausage she also inhaled? Houston, we have a problem ... a really "big" problem.
It honestly broke my heart for her.
As a medical research doctor and graduate from The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, I've dedicated my life to discovering easy ways for people to lose weight, look beautiful, and live healthy, empowered lives. It is painful for me to see someone making food their master, serving it versus letting food serve them with beautifying nutrition, as it was designed to do! I believe every day is a gift, and our eating should reflect our gratefulness for life.

I'm not going to sugar-coat the facts-about-fat for you: You are fat because you have chosen to be fat by eating more calories than you burn.
Sadly, your chosen path leads to more than thirty deadly diseases, such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, stroke, and sudden-death heart attack. A fat life is like a box of chocolates: you never know what disease you are going to get.
Death walks slowly toward all of us from birth, but when we are fat, death runs toward us. We don't even have to move off our couches! The big bad wolf will break your little piggy door down sooner or later-it's a fact.
Have you already failed on another diet? It's okay; I have too. More than likely, the diet failed you instead of you failing the diet. What I mean is that many popular diets have never actually been clinically proven to work in a well-designed clinical trial. You end up feeling hungry, constantly hungry, which leads to another dismal diet failure.
Unfortunately, many popular diets are also too difficult to be understood easily unless you have a science degree. Complicated or controversial theories produce more confusion than lost pounds. Even worse than a confusing diet plan is a plan that is too complex to continue using over time, making the minimal results you achieve short-lived. After suffering on the diet for a few weeks, you "fall off the wagon," and the pounds rush back to your belly, gluteus maximus, and legs, clinging on in clumps of dietary defiance. Having the "max" return to your maximus isn't fun or flattering.

At fifty years old, my mom was a wreck in the midst of a midlife meltdown. A rapidly enlarging waistline embarrassed her. Clothes that used to fit were now uncomfortable. When mom called me insisting for help, I knew from the sound of her tearfully stressed-out voice that something very special and very powerful had to be done to help her.
