Jessica Rite woke up in the hospital to the news of her husband's death. She doesn't remember how she got hurt, but she does remember being angry enough to kill her husband. When state investigators inquire into the explosion that killed her husband, they warn the county sheriff and Rite family friend, "Boat" Boatwright, to stay out of the investigation. Jessica, finding more questions than answers while going through her husband's papers, turns to Boat for help. Unable to assist, he suggests she ask her neighbor, Sam Ellison, for aid. Sam, an ex-government agent Boat has known for years, seems reluctant to get involved until he meets the tempting Jessica Rite. The small town is divided when neighbor turns against neighbor and families are torn apart. Murder and suspense abound in rural Colorado, while gossip flies as the romance flourishes between Jessica and Sam.
