About the Author

Peter Sheaf Hersey Newell (1862 –1924), born during the American Civil War on 5 March 1862 near Rice Corners, in McDonough County, Illinois. He lived in that area until 1883 when he moved to New York, where he enrolled at Art Students League. By the fall of 1883 his work was published in New York Graphic and Harper's Bazaar. Newell began his career painting portraits, using crayons as a medium, before turning to children's book. Besides his own books, Newell illustrated Mark Twain's Innocents Abroad and Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

I think this is a wonderful book. I love it, and the illustrations are beautiful, too. There's an innocence to this book. I think it would be great for parents to read this book to their children or for teachers to put in their personal classroom library. Students would love having a book like this one read to them.
