Overview

Funny, clever, surreal, and thought-provoking, this Kafkaesque masterpiece introduces the unforgettable Bjorn, an exceptionally meticulous office worker striving to live life on his own terms.

Bjorn is a compulsive, meticulous bureaucrat who discovers a secret room at the government office where he works—a secret room that no one else in his office will acknowledge. When Bjorn is in his room, what his co-workers see is him standing by the wall and staring off into space looking dazed, relaxed, and decidedly creepy. Bjorn's bizarre behavior eventually leads his co-workers to try and have him fired, but Bjorn will turn the tables on them with help from his secret room.

Debut author Jonas Karlsson doesn't leave a word out of place in this brilliant, bizarre, delightful take on how far we will go—in a world ruled by conformity—to live an individual and examined life.

The Room is set in Sweden, but could as easily be set in any current office. Anyone who works in an open-plan ("cube-farm") office space knows how bland they are. They're the physical blueprint of the expected mental conformity. When you work in one, you are expected to buy into the concept these dull spaces foster teamwork. Extroversion is expected. The absolute great thing about this story was that I kept going back and forth in my thinking: was Bjorn crazy or was he a genius? If he was crazy, was it the way we're expected to work in these times that made him that way? A slim novel with a thought-provoking look at modern work life and conformity. Quirky and suspenseful, funny and sad This is a terrific little book that one can read in one sitting. It immediately made me thing of another book--The Dinner--perhaps because it was by a Scandanavian author.  Well worth picking this book up.  It's hard to figure Bjorn out at first. Is he just dense? Does he perhaps have Asperger's? Is he just overly narcissistic? Or is it something far worse? Whatever it is, I could see a little of myself and others in him--a person looking for some recognition, needing to feel special or important. I thought he just took it too far, couldn't keep that insecurity to himself. But then..... I'll look for more from this author.
