The Roots of the Rolling Stones: Saints & Sinners
It's no hushed secret that the Rolling Stones have musical roots deep in the blues, and this 15-track compilation features the original versions of Jimmy Reed's "Bright Lights, Big City," Mississippi Fred McDowell's "You Gotta Move," and Robert Wilkins' "Prodigal Son," but it also has songs like Benny Spellman's "Fortune Teller," the Temptations' "Just My Imagination," and Eric Donaldson's rocksteady "Cherry Oh Baby" that have no direct connection to the blues. The Stones were and are the Stones, and if this set doesn't exactly define or explain why that is, it's still a fun sequence to listen to even if it hardly coughs up any secrets.
