Her heart longs for justice, but her body clamors for sin.

Once the darling of high society, Mazie Chetwyn knows firsthand how quickly the rich and powerful turn their backs on the less fortunate. Orphaned, penniless and determined to defy their ruthless whims, she joins forces with a local highwayman who steals from the rich to give to the poor.

Then the pawn broker snitches, and Mazie is captured by the Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire. A man who is far too handsome, far too observant...and surely as corrupt as his father once was.

Sensible, rule-driven Trent Carthwick, twelfth Earl of Radford, is certain the threat of the gallows will prompt the villagers' beloved Angel of Kindness to reveal the highwayman's identity. But his bewitching captive volunteers nothing-except a sultry, bewildering kiss.

And so the games begin. Trent feints, Mazie parries. He threatens, she pretends nonchalance. He cajoles, she rebuffs. Thwarted at every turn, Trent probes deep into her one vulnerability-her past. There he finds the leverage he needs and a searing truth that challenges all he believes about right and wrong.

Warning: The delicious, if left-brained, hero might forever change all you think you know about the Robin Hood legend. Contains razor-sharp wordplay, skinny dipping and tortured hearts.

LaValle’s slow-moving debut keeps the focus on sexual tension. Mazie Chetwyn is a known accomplice to the so-called Midnight Rider, a Robin Hood–like highwayman. When she’s caught trying to pawn stolen goods, darkly handsome Trent, the 12th earl of Radford, tries to persuade her to reveal the identity and location of her partner in crime. Despite the carrot of her attraction to Radford and the stick of abuse at the hands of his magistrate, Mazie remains stoically adamant. When Radford’s sister recognizes Mazie as Lady Margaret Parthena Harlan Chetwyn, errant daughter of a dishonored lord, for the sake of appearances Radford is compelled to play host to his prisoner. Of course duty rubs passion the wrong way and Mazie’s feminine wiles just plain rub at Radford. Witty banter does nothing to overcome a flimsy plot. Agent: Nalini Akolekar, Spencerhill Associates. LaValle's debut is exciting and action packed, with a hero and heroine who play well off each other.

Mazie and her highwayman accomplice are attempting their own vigilante justice, Robin Hood-style. Trent is responsible for capturing the highwayman stealing from the aristocracy. Mazie’s world is turned upside down when she is captured by Trent. She knows everything about the mysterious highwayman threatening Trent’s domain but she refuses to reveal it no matter what Trent threatens. This leads to many encounters with deception and game play all while fighting the overwhelming attraction they have for each other. As the reader I was left in the dark as to Mazie’s secrets and motives as well, that brought on some frustration and confusion at times. The games and deception Mazie orchestrated fell flat for me, they weren’t witty or intriguing. I wish they had been more interesting because that would have added another layer to the beginning of the novel. The games got monotonous at times and I kept thinking that her big secret had better be good or I would be angry about being kept in the dark. All of the deceptions were accompanied by the developing attraction between Mazie and Trent. I did enjoy that part. The progress of their relationship was a little slow but completely understandable given their circumstances. All of this leads them into a hot, intense and consuming transition from lust to love which felt genuine. When I read a romance I want to feel the emotions of the characters. I felt the pain of betrayal and the joy of acceptance with them. The romance was perfect and a complete success for me. Other aspects of the story did not work quite so well. I never got to know and love the characters as individuals. Even at the end, I still cannot say that I really know Trent or Mazie. Some of Mazie’s reactions to situations were strange, I can’t imagine a real person reacting the way she did. The final reveal of Mazie’s big secret was enough to satisfy my curiosity but it was a little rushed and I wanted more details. While there were some problems with the execution of the story, it was still quite good. Not very many authors can write a romance which I feel this emotionally connected to. That alone is enough to impress me and make me come back for more. I guarantee I will read another book by Ms. LaVelle and if it is Roane’s story I will be thrilled.

Leigh LaValle's debut has the perfect blend of romance, intrigue and action; a great read for any fan of the genre. The Runaway Countess stars a hero and heroine who are both set in their ways and both have their own ideas of what is right and wrong, making a romance full of sparks and sexual tension. It's a Robin Hood theme with a twist and reminds me of early historicals by Julie Garwood, one of my favorite authors. It's a must for fans of historical romance!

This is book one in the Nottinghamshire series. Mazie Chetwyn has been taken captive by the Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire. He knows that she has been working for the Midnight Rider and wants information to enable him to be captured.  Trent Chathwick, the Earl of Radford and the Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, is attracted to Mazie from their introduction and the feeling is mutual. When he finds out that she is really Lady Margaret, he is at a loss as to what to do with her. Lady Margaret goes from captive to "guest" with Trent's sister acting as chaperone, but Mazie still finds ways to thwart Trent's ability to find the Midnight Rider by giving him false clues.  Will Trent find out why Mazie will not give up information about the Midnight Rider and what will happen to their mutual attraction when it looks like Mazie might be heading to the gallows? I throughly enjoyed this book. The banter between the H/H had me laughing out loud.  I always love when there is a very strong female lead and Mazie did not disappoint. The strength of character in Trent was heartbreaking as he had to reveal things about his family that he didn't want to be true.  I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

I bought this on impulse. Glad I did. The author has a beautiful voice and the romance was really well portrayed. I hope Cat gets her own story.
