QUOTES FROM READERS:
Just read The Safe Word by Karen Long - an unputdownable serial tale thriller. James Purefoy
For DS Eleanor Raven It's not so much who, what or when but 'why' that leads this powerful read to its conclusion and Karen Long reminds us that a brutal, vicious and destructive act is not inherently 'Evil' or derived from Satan but is a rational choice made by a human being. The quirky, offbeat and endearing relationship between Eleanor and her partner Laurence Whitefoot shines a light on this dark compelling world of sexual intrigue and mystery. My imagination was certainly held captive! Robson Green
Most fictional detectives these days have to have a 'thing' to set them apart from the others, and Raven's is one of the most original for a long time. The plot moves in some unexpected directions, and builds to a genuinely exciting climax. The Safe Word is an impressive, confident debut. Convincing characters and some nice twists make for a compelling, satisfying thriller, and I look forward to seeing what's next for Eleanor Raven. Killing Time
There are rules that every player of every game must abide by, no matter how dangerous the sport.
Toronto has become the backdrop to a macabre set of artistic installations: women kidnapped, tortured and horrifically displayed by a killer with a vision.
Only someone capable of understanding the killer's creative desire will be able to stop the murders and D I Eleanor Raven is uniquely qualified. Driven by a complex personality she pursues only the facts, only the things she can see, but never casts a judgement.
But she also has a dark and dangerous secret - one that will threaten her very survival.

WHEN THE SAFE WORD IS ANYTHING BUT ..... DS Eleanor Raven has a dark and dangerous secret that may destroy her very life. This book takes us into the seedy and terrifying world of BDSM or “bondage/domination sadomasochism” . Someone is offering a 'pretend' kidnapping to young women who would like to experience the ultimate in mild or simulated pain or humiliation. Anyone involved in these kinds of games must have a safe word .. a word, that when spoken, means the end of the game. Someone is taking it further .... young women are found tortured, and horribly displayed in public places by a killer with a vision. In his mind, there is no safe word. Along with her new partner, Detective Laurence Whitefoot, Eleanor needs to stop this psychopath, this vicious killer. He knows Eleanor's secret and he has his eyes set on her. Creepy reading ... got goosebumps a few times. Great bad guy! I haven't decided yet whether or not I like Eleanor. At times she comes across rude and obnoxious and very bossy. She doesn't think much of her new partner, but I think that will change in Book 2 of the series .....THE VAULT. I like Whitefoot ... he's very considerate of his partner's feelings and tries very hard to not only fit in, but become the kind of partner she can come to depend on. Many thanks to NetGalley / Lawsome books for furnishing this book in exchange for an honest opinion.
Eleanor Raven is quite easily one of my favourite female characters this year, she is not your run of the mill police officer. DS Raven has an interesting personal life that is very separate from her professional career, but it seems this very well hidden secret could be exposed at any moment ruining her life. There are many characters to compliment Eleanor Raven, finding herself with a new partner she doesn’t like change and wants her old colleague back by her side. With a serial killer on the loose she has no option but to work with Laurence Whitefoot. The plot is gritty, suspenseful and captivating. There are many elements that keep you turning the page, but the killer is so well written you want to know what he is going to do next. Now while ‘The Safe Word’ is set in Canada I felt it could have been happening in any town or city, there were a few details about the setting but it is so well written you could picture it happening anywhere. With a well written plot and a variety of characters, you lose yourself for many hours. A must read for any crime thriller lover
