The Salt Machine: Book #1 of And in Their Passing: A Darkness by Jeff Smieding

George Detzler hates crying into his mother's Salt Machine almost as much as he loves his sister, Vera.

So when Vera gets sick of crying and disappears into the forbidden forest behind their house with a strange boy, George heads out in search of her.

In the forest, he finds himself thrown into a world scarier and stranger than he ever thought possible.

As he battles a giant wolf, finds his way through a massive labyrinth, and looks for his sister, George learns that an angry spirit is trying to bring magic back into the world. It's up to him to stop it before it brings about the end of everything he has ever known.

Author Jeff Smieding grew up with his mom and his cat in the small town of Altoona, Wisconsin. When his mom was at work, he spent his summers reading fantastical stories and playing in the big forest behind his house. After many great adventures, he grew up to be a writer, musician, and a live performer with the Lit 6 Project and Electric Arc Radio. He has been published in Volume One and Revolver. He can still be seen on especially cold nights, when the moon is especially bright, reading his sad and terrifying tales to children and adults alike in book stores and coffee houses. Jeff currently lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota with his wife, two children, and two cats.
