This was the ninth Scarlet Pimpernel novel written, however, it is fourteenth if read chronologically. It should be read after THE ADVENTURES OF THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL and before A CHILD OF THE REVOLUTION. Again Orczy skillfully interweaves historic fact with fiction (although she does say this story takes place in April of 1794) this time through the real life figures of Thérésa Cabarrus, and Jean-Lambert Tallien; inserting the Scarlet Pimpernel as an instigator of the role Tallien played in the Thermidorian Reaction in July 1794 (an actual historical event).
