This was the fourteenth Scarlet Pimpernel novel written, however, it is ninth if read chronologically. It should be read after LORD TONY’S WIFE and before ELDORADO. In this novel, a packet of letters which incriminate the highest officials in France, become the object of everyone’s desires. The person who holds the packet also holds the key to great power.

Baroness Emma Orczy (full name: Emma ("Emmuska") Magdolna Rozália Mária Jozefa Borbála Orczy de Orczi) (September 23, 1865 – November 12, 1947) was a British novelist, playwright and artist of Hungarian noble origin. She was most notable for her series of novels featuring the Scarlet Pimpernel. Some of her paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy in London.
