"People" is a literary novel about a young man's Eastern European homecoming and entanglement in a crime. Like the first book in this series, this story is entangled in mystery and family and suspicion and murder. The tragic story is as lyrical and lovely as it is enthralling. The prose is almost poetry, and more delightful for it. The writing is huge in selecting language that sidesteps the ordinary in pursuit of the extraordinary, always employing the biggest ideas around. Why dwell in the everyday, the style asks, when it can soar to the supernatural. The ideas are original as can be, introducing readers to concepts that had never occurred to them.
