Overview

THE SECRET GARDEN......A charming story about children discovering happiness in life, largely by immersing themselves in the simple joys of nature. It was refreshing to be reminded that it is the simple things in life that make life worth living. Sometimes those of us who are older need to be reminded of this! 225 Pages in print!

The book tells the story of Mary Lennox, a spoiled, contrary orphan, who is sent to live in her uncle's manor in Yorkshire. She is left to herself by her uncle Mr. Craven, who travels most of the time, trying to escape from memories of his wife. The only person who has any time for Mary is the chambermaid Martha. It is Martha who tells Mary about the walled garden, Mrs. Craven's favourite garden, which nobody has seen the inside of since she her death; Mr. Craven locked it and buried the key.

A young British girl born and reared in India loses her neglectful parents in an earthquake. She is returned to England to live at her uncle's castle. Her uncle is very distant due to the loss of his wife ten years before. Neglected once again, she begins exploring the estate and discovers a garden that has been locked and neglected. Aided by one of the servants' boys, she begins restoring the garden, and eventually discovers some other secrets of the manor.

A SECOND REVIEW!
Little Mary Lennox is orphaned and alone in India, where her parents had settled during British colonial rule of the country. Sent far away to live with her uncle in England, Mary is angry with the world, feeling abandoned and unhappy with the strange new life to which she must adjust. She is cared for by a cheery maid, Martha, who encourages the stern little girl to explore the vast and beautiful estate that she must now call "home." Mary takes Martha's advice, although she cannot bring herself to believe that it will make any difference. Nothing seems to capture her interest, until the day that she discovers a secret garden—one that has been locked up for years, ever since the long-ago death of her beautiful aunt. Mary struggles to put together the pieces of the puzzle that she encounters in her new home—an aloof uncle whom she hardly ever sees, a sickly and unhappy young cousin who lies in bed all day, a lovely and kind aunt whose passing has left the house in sadness and gloom. As Mary attempts to unlock the secret garden, she discovers painful family secrets whose release may be the only hope of bringing happiness back to herself and her family.
