The Secret Seekers Society and the Beast of Bladenboro was a fantastic book. The first paragraph alone drew me in, and as the story progressed it demanded my attention. I couldn't put it down- I was completely captivated. The author managed to walk the fine line between too simplistic and too complex and created the perfect balance. As I read, I could feel the children's anger and confusion. I could see the mansion with it's array of rich detail and picture all the interesting creatures who call the story home. This review is very difficult for me to write. There are so many different parts of the book that I enjoyed and would love to discuss, but I am afraid of spoiling anything for those who have yet to embark upon this adventure. Instead, I will say that Mr. J. L. Hickey has an amazing gift for words. I highly recommend that anyone reading this give the book a chance. You won't be disappointed. I, myself, will be waiting eagerly (and none too patiently) for the next installment.

The Secret Seekers Society is, by it's own admission, very secretive. The people that are in the society aren't able to tell anyone anything about it or that they are in it. It's like Fight Club: The first rule of SSS is don't talk about SSS. The family and friends of anyone in SSS have no clue who or what they are. This proves to be difficult for the two main characters in this story as their parents have died and they are thrust into the world of the Secret Seekers.  I was pretty excited to read this book. I had purchased it a while ago and I have been hearing good things about the book. I was slightly disappointed in the book as it did not live up to the expectations I had for it. I expected more action and adventure and not so much back story or the kids wondering what was going on. It lacked excitement for me and I think if it had been told from first person from one of the kids, it might have been slightly better. I never really connected with any of the characters. I felt sorry for the kids because their parents were dead and no one would tell them anything. I also found lots of grammatical errors throughout the book. The book that I was reading was purchased from Amazon so it wasn't an ARC or unedited proof.  I am not sure if I will continue with the story as I felt like there wasn't enough of a hook for me to keep reading. For how much talking/non-action there was, there wasn't enough explained or to make me have the desire to want to find out more. It's up in the air at this time if I will continue. I guess I will see when the time comes. I give this story 3 books.

***I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*** The beginning of this book reminded me of a series I read in middle school, about 3 siblings who were orphaned and were being handed off to unknown relatives. It's the same sort of situation, but in Hunter and Elly's case, they are coming to a place that cares about their safety, unlike the series I read in middle school.  Anyway, The Secret Seekers Society is a secret group of people that seek out the legends and monsters that society calls myths. But Hunter and Elly are locked away in their room, and are given very little information, so they sneak out to find out what is going on.  The story at times lagged, mostly during the first half of the book. I'll admit that the first half struggled to keep me interested because of those lagging spots. I remember starting the book, but put it down and didn't read it for 2 weeks. The second half was way more exciting and I quickly read through the remainder. There is a character named Dominick, and although at first I pitied him, by the end of the book I completely despised him.  Some redeeming qualities of this book is that it is in third person omniscient, so we can see the thoughts and actions of characters that the author wants us to see.  There were many funny moments where I found myself grinning, and other times where I read quickly to find out what was going to happen next. We also got to see a small part of an adult love triangle, which also kept me reading to find out what would happen with those people.  Overall, it's a good story, but the first half seriously lacked in piquing my interest. The Secret Seekers Society and the Beast of Bladenboro receives 3 Platypires from me.

I won this book from a giveaway. This is normally not the type of book that I would enjoy, but I am very glad that I gave it a shot. The main characters of the story work well both with each other and will the story line. The amount of imagination in this story that the twists and turns keep you guessing all the way to the end! Even the end leaves you wanting more! I cannot wait to read the next book in this series! J.L. Hickey is a marvelous author who creates a wonderful world for adults and kids alike.

The Secret Seekers Society and the Beast of Bladenboro by J. L. Hickey is a fantastic book. I knew right away that I was going to enjoy reading this book when I read the blurb. The storyline is very interesting with lots of adventures. It had my attention from the very beginning all the way to the end. Hunter and Elly are siblings and recently lost their parents. They are orphaned and sent to live with their Godfather Professor Clandestine, who they haven’t ever met, at the Belmonte Estate. It is their parents request that if anything ever happened to them that they go live with the Professor. The transition is very hard on Hunter and Elly. They don’t understand and they miss their parents very much.   Patricia and Margot, the caretakers at the mansion, will be taking care of them while they are living there. They take Hunter and Elly to the room that they are sharing and tell them while they have outside guests visiting, they will be locked in the room. Hunter doesn’t like the idea of them being locked in so he comes up with a plan to escape.  Hunter and Elly’s adventure begins. They go exploring through the mansion and find out lots of secrets about the place.  As I was reading, I felt like I was on the adventure with them, exploring and finding out a lot of things.  J. L. Hickey has done an awesome job writing this awesome book. I am really looking forward to reading more of his books and hopefully a sequel to the Secret Seekers Society. I definitely recommend this book to my friends to read.

I loved the story and the secrecy and intrigue behind The Secret Seekers Society - never mind trying to say that quickly, even typing it gets me tongue tied LOL.  Great title. Hunter and Elly had just suffered the loss of their parents in an awful accident and were sent to live with their Godfather on a secluded estate.  Things are not what they seem, and the children soon find themselves in danger as they try and unravel the secrecy surrounding their new home, but they also find friendship and happiness in a place that seemed hostile and strange to them when they first arrived. It is a great story filled with exciting adventures and mystical creatures.  The Manor is filled with secrets, strange objects, and creatures that lurk in the shadows - which results in an exciting read. The author has an amazing imagination and I look forward to seeing what he comes up with next in the Solomon's Seal. I really enjoyed this book.  It is aimed primarily at the younger reader, but I am sure it will appeal to readers of all ages.

For anyone that loves an adventure, Author J.L. Hickey provides a novel with rich imagery and tons of heart. “These aren’t real, right?” Hunter added, a bit baffled by the conversation. “I don’t know, you tell me,” Margot added slyly. “Are you a believer?” she asked. “In what?” Hunter replied. “Of the unknown, of course,” Ms. Ellingbee joined in. “Of fairy tales, legendary creatures, magical items, and of course all those wondrous little things in between.” She smiled. “Oh…..” Hunter paused for a moment, thinking of the question.” We are introduced to siblings Hunter and Elly Jakobs who have experienced one of the most heartbreaking events that no child should have to endure. Weeks after their parents demise they are thrust into a world of secrecy, myths and inevitable danger. Hunter and Elly end up moving into Belmonte Estate where they are to be raised by their Godfather Professor Calenstine, a man they have never met or had knowledge of. For both of them these sudden changes are hard to deal with. Not only have they lost the two most important people in their lives, but they are thrust into a mysterious castle in which they are kept in their rooms. As many of us know kids will be kids and curiosity get’s the best of them. “Hunter quickly grew bored, and his curiosity of what secrets lurked within the mansion only grew greater as the days went on. Elly, however, was quite happy spending the majority of her day reading all the wonderful books they had given her.” Hunter is tenacious boy. He wants to know what secrets lurk behind the door of his bedroom, while Elly is more the voice of reason. The two of them end up sneaking out of their room and encounter the Beast of Bladenboro. This event leads to some unfortunate circumstances that leads to Elly being injured and Hunter to reflect on the world that seems to be spinning out of control around him. “What if she never wakes up? he thought. Again, the dreary word popped up in his mind–alone. He thought of how fickle the word was. It was used every day for so many reasons, but now such a simple term haunted his thoughts more than anything in the world.” While I don’t want to give too much away this incident leads to Hunter and Elly’s Uncle Joe to travel to Belmonte Estate to look after them during their time of need. Not only do they have their uncle with them but they start to make friends. We are introduced to Alistair and Olivia, two other kids their age that are going to be going to school with them at the estate. Not only do they have friends to hang out with, but friends to help them discover the secrets to what is going on in this mansion, and to stop the Beast of Bladenboro. In addition we are also introduced to Margot, a woman that has captured not only the hearts of Hunter and Elly with her kind and compassionate actions but also Uncle Joe. Plus their is Plato, the loveable android that I cannot wait to learn more about. As well as the adorable Trayer (I want one!) , a Cusith that acts as a loveable puppy and guard dog to Elly. And finally Professor Calenstine who is full of knowledge, life experience, and I cannot wait to learn more about him. Overall I loved this book because of the underlying message. Yes, the detailed imagery was awesome, the spin on mythological characters was fun too, but the sense of family is what really made me love this story. Family is what you make it, and although Elly and Hunter will forever miss their parents they are not alone. “For the first time since his parent’s demise, he felt like a family once again. No matter how strange and bizarre his journey into the mansion had been, there was no other place in the world he would rather be at the moment. It was, in all honesty, the first time he peered out his bedroom window not longing to escape and run away.” I’m excited to watch Hunter and Elly grow and to see what other kinds of mischief they will get into. This book is perfect for any age. Parents would love to read this to their kids, and adults would love to read this to escape their own mundane lives. E.L. Hickey gives us a feast for our imaginations and I can’t wait to read what’s next! 4.5 stars*

Secret Seekers Society and the Beast of Bladenboro is an exciting and creative story about two children who learn family of secrets they could never have imagined. From the introductory scenes of the novel, the reader is brought into a world of both familiar mythical creatures and ones new to our imaginative world. Readers are kept on their toes as the Jakobs children explore their new home and learn more about these creatures and the secrets that will forever change their lives. The writing is one for both young adults and adults alike! This very inventive story is an original and well thought out tale that will leave readers eager to read the next installation and to find out what will come of the Jakobs children.
