Most high-end, computerized sewing machines also have machine embroidery capabilities, allowing sewists of all skill levels to embroider designs ranging from simple lines to intricate multicolor pictures onto their fabric. In this guide to sewing-machine embroidery, Keegan, editor of machine embroidery magazine Flair, provides a step-by-step overview of the basics, from machine operation to selecting the appropriate thread, stabilizer, fabric, and needles for a project. The types of machine embroidery, which include everything from machine-embroidered cross-stitch on traditional Aida fabric, machine-made lace, and monograms, are also covered pleasingly, and sewists who are unfamiliar with some of the more intricate techniques will be inspired by the possibilities. A final section addresses the decorative embroidery stitches that are available on many sewing machines—not just high-end embroidery machines—allowing sewists with basic equipment to join the machine-embroidery fun. VERDICT With so many different brands of computerized sewing machines on the market, each with its own quirks, it's difficult to write a one-size-fits-all guide to machine embroidery. Keegan's coverage of tools and materials is helpful, but novices interested in getting started embroidering on their home machine will want to have their machine's instruction book handy as well.
