Lilian Biro is an ambitious young Hungarian woman with dreams of a storybook life, and when she meets a kind, handsome British man she hopes she's on the right path. Finally. Lilian meets the man of her dreams when his friends pay for her to perform a lap-dance at the local strip club where she is working. When she fails to get his name and contact information she moves from stripping to prostitution in order to make money because her mother badly needs an operation. But the prostitution leads to drugs because she needs to get high in order to do the things she needs to do. And her boyfriend encourages she keep hooking in order to bring in the money because he needs what she makes to pay for his drug and gambling problem. Lilian meets an untimely end, and her sister Vivian tries to track down Lilian's killer, meeting the handsome British man along way. I ... I'm not sure where to begin with this ... Let's start with the title. I've read the entire book and I must have missed something because I don't understand where "tourist" comes into play. It was certainly the word that got my attention when I requested this book, but I didn't see the connection to 'sex tourist' in the book. After reading this, I feel that "The Sex Victim" would have been more appropriate. Now the cover photo, as pictured above... Clearly this is meant to capitalize on the popularity of Fifty Shades of Grey, with a similar style photo which implies a sensual-ness. But there is nothing sensual inside these covers. This book is about as un-sexy and un-sensual as a book with lots of sex can be. The women in the story are prostitutes. They do not enjoy what they are doing, but do it because it is how they make money. Their 'johns' - or 'punters' as they are referred to in the book - are typically not attractive or respectable men. Now the story ... we are tantalized with the idea that this is "based on a shocking true story" and author Olivia Wild tells us in the Foreword that: This book is in memory of my beloved sororal twin, Lilian. The last time I saw her alive she talked about her ambition to become a writer one day. That way, she would have escaped her death-trap: prostitution. I inherited both her handwritten diary and, on her laptop, her very first book in the making. Except...! The Foreword is by "Vivian Biro" - a character in the book. Ah, rascal Olivia Wild - this is just part of the set-up to make us think we're reading something that the prostitute wrote. Except... the book is written from three different points of view, and the first 1/3 or so definitely has a different voice to it. A different rhythm and meter to the language. So either Wild is very clever and talented and definitely changed her style, or this first part was written by someone else. This first part really lets the reader see how someone could 'fall' into the world of prostitution and drugs, and how difficult it would be to get out, along with what a despicable world it is. The second part, told through the eyes of "Vivian Biro" changes the nature of the story completely. What was a narrative about life as a prostitute now becomes a murder mystery, with Biro on the path to solving her sister's murder. The police wouldn't bother because the woman was just a prostitute. This section was dull. There was no drive or passion. We understand that the women were sisters, creating Vivian's drive to solve the crime, but it's really not en

I was generously given an ARC. This was a hard read due to the subject matter esp because of Lilian's disappearance and the life she led. Her story is so heartbreaking. But as Vivian starts to unravel her sister's life to find out what happened, one can feel her love for her sister. The story catches the reader's attention to the satisfying conclusion. It definitely worth the time!

from the moment I picked up “The Sex Tourist” and read the prologue I was hooked, as the characters are so real and alive and the descriptions are so vivid and clear, it is impossible to put down. The author has painted a very realistic picture of a different side of life which at times is very moving, sad, stressful but it is done with respect considering the dark, and sometimes tragic events that unfold. This is certainly a story that will stay with me for a long time. This novel impressed me with its excellent plot (especially the second half) and Wild’s superb writing style, effortlessly lovely, even during the darker and more disturbing episodes. It was an addicting, intoxicating to read from start to finish, although I did not want it to end… a sign of a truly satisfying read Recommended for adult readers of erotica-drama and suspense. Adult content.

I loved that this book made me FEEL something. Sometimes I loved it, sometimes I hated it and it made me sick to read some of what happened, other times I thought it was a bit contrived--but I was never, ever bored. The story, overall, is engaging and creative; I was surprised more than once, which I always appreciate. Of course the book made my eyes pop wide at parts, and I was disgusted other times. How could I not? I am a woman, a wife and a mother. I think it is impossible not to become emotional when you become invested in the characters and see what some women are forced to endure. “The Sex Tourist” by Olivia Wild has the intellectual and emotional impact I look for in a great book, one that takes me away, teaches me something about life, makes me feel something that I wasn’t necessarily expecting, and when it’s over I feel like I’ve lost a good friend – but one whom I am lucky to have met. Recommend for mature readers of thrillers/suspense/erotic fiction (even if based on real events), and I hope to read more from Ms. Olivia Wild in the future.

I LOVE to read, but live a hugely busy life. It gets more complicated upon that rare occasion when a book is so captivating, so enthralling, that it is impossible to walk away. With only definitive hours in a day, something has to give. For me, that was sleep! And it was worth every sacrificed minute. “The Sex Tourist” was the grand slam home run and exceeded my wildest expectations and I would bet, maybe yours, as well. It reads almost like a sweeping erotic thriller with carefully executed drama that truly feels ripped from real life (as the author claims – and I do believe her), but in an almost unbelievable way. The events that happen are shocking, yet believable – they say truth is strange than fiction-, and the characters are drawn in such a way, warts and all, that their humanity comes through and we sympathize, even when they are not so nice, right up to the climatic conclusion. An absolute must read. Adults only.

it has been a while since I have found a book that I wanted to read slowly so that I could soak in every detail in hopes that the last page seems to never come. When reading the synopsis of this novel, I never imagined that I would feel this connected to this book, but I was wrong! This novel was so much more than the description states. The idiosyncrasies of each character are so well defined and sympathetic - and expressed in such ways that come across as if you are there in the scenes with them (for better or worse). I was invited into the pages and could not only imagine the atmosphere (wherever the story was taking place at the time), but all of my senses were collectively enticed from the very first page until the last… sometimes this was hard to take, especially with some of the unpleasant horrors Lily endures. Such a whirlwind of emotions and surprising events that keeps us hooked throughout, and characters we love, or love to hate. An emotional, heart wrenching and ultimately triumphant (if not bittersweet) journey of broken souls, sin and redemption not soon forgotten, and one I will recommend to my family and friends.

I thought “The Sex Tourist” to be absolutely riveting! I started reading it one night after supper with every intention of reading just a few chapters for that evening and could not put it down. Not only is it an emotionally engaging story with well-drawn characters whom you grow to care about deeply, but it is also satisfies my need for the darker, edgier side of life that I can only really experience through reading ‘fiction’ novels such as this one. From the ‘alternative’ lifestyle to the characters and the dirtiest of deeds….Read this book. I’m so thrilled that I got to know these characters through these pages, and even though some are better than others they are all fascinating and not the typical caricature ‘good girl/bad girl’ we see so often in books. These characters are flawed but relatable, and even though most people would judge Lily and Viv, they haven’t been in their shoes. Now that we have things a look a little different. Not for the squeamish or close minded, but for those who want to see just how real things can get out there.

I read this book by Olivia Wild and found myself completely transported to the story, completely forgetting where I was. A thrilling sexy suspense that has more tangents and sub plots than many others I’ve read, lately. There is a dynamic cast of characters (especially the main narrators Lilian and Vivian) each of whom have their own stories to tell and conflicts to overcome. Never read something from a this particular POV before of prostitute/sex worker and I found it to be really jaw-dropping and enlightening at the same time. I admit my eyebrows shot up more than once and I gasped several times. Way too much to delve into here, but Wild’s skill with story and prose and broken but strong characters will captivate readers looking for their next great read.

I loved Olivia Wild’s “The Sex Tourist”. She he has captured several slices of what feels like a raw, dirty life with graphic detail and drama starring some unforgettable characters. But what I loved most about the book was the fact that I normally wouldn’t have much empathy in real life for someone who is in this line of work, but when we see why it was she became a prostitute and her influences, we really feel for Lillian and actually want to support and help her. Some of what she endures is nothing short of horrific, including her untimely death. When the first book ends, the second book picks up more intensity and high-stakes drama and character development. Ms. Wild tells this enticing story with finesse and great heart and you can tell she knows her characters well. It’s hard to read through to the end and remain unaffected in some way. A definite recommended read for adult fans of erotica and thrillers.

Oh wow, I loved this book and read the whole thing in one week, which is fast for me, especially considering I have no free time to read these days! But it just seemed to go by so fast and I never wanted to stop reading it, even late into the evening. I was mesmerized by the world Olivia Wild creates, one so realistic and authentic, yet something I’ve never really read about (or remotely experienced) before. Though was really interesting idea to give two different stories here – the first one being based on Lily’s diary, the second from her sister Vivian as she works to uncover her sister’s murder and deliver vigilante justice. It was incredible the way that Wild was able to really put herself inside the various characters’ ‘heads’ to tell this story from a broad spectrum POV (mostly) but still maintain the hold of us knowing Lily and Vivian intimately. Too much happens in this book to cover properly in a short review so you really just have to read it for yourself… you will not be disappointed! Adults only.

I didn’t think I would, but I loved this book! I didn’t want to ever stop reading, and this was almost like reading a recounting of something “real” that had happened to “real people”, and had to remind myself that it is ‘a fictional’ drama (although it is based on true events). The way it reads it is hard to tell what is fiction and fact and that is what makes it so amazing, I think – because it all feels so real! “The Sex Tourist” by Olivia Wild wastes no time in getting to the action and sets the tone and style right off the bat. I was already hooked before I even finished the first chapter. Then the story continues through Lily’s life as a prostitute, and Wild does a great job of creating a believable backdrop, wherever the story is happening in the world and the characters that come into play. Then Lily’s story suddenly ends and is picked up in book 2 by Vivian. The author has a solid voice in spinning these complex and interesting plotlines all together, and we never really know what will happen from one scene to the next, or who to trust or who was to blame…motives were suspect… or maybe I was being paranoid, ha!. The ending was perfect, even though I was disappointed when it was all over. I wanted to read more! Well done.

I knew by the 20% mark that I would really love this book and it would go on my “favorites” shelf, and I was right! I admit I had no real expectations when starting it, seeing as how I’d never read the author before and the description felt a bit generic to me. Wondered if she’d pull it off, and I truly believe he did! I was so immersed in this book and impressed with the level of detailing on almost every single aspect. A lesser author would have glossed over some of these scenes that Olivia Wild carefully and masterfully brought to life in a memorable way. And the characters…oh wow, Loved them all! (even the ones I didn’t like, like some of the gross punters) Felt like a got a great dose of a different, harsher type of reality and way of living that is very different from my own, and including watching Lily and later Viv navigate through the physical and mental issues from their work and their past. Very easy to read even when the subject matter is quite tawdry and dark, with great pacing and narrative. A great ending to a wild ride. Recommend.

This read really drew me in, I liked the characters as well as the story, so much drama and suspense. I was hooked from beginning to end.

I’m not sure how to even describe this book as SO much happens, and it seems to touch on so many elements, themes, and subjects. Smooth pacing, plenty of action, and amazing characters/personalities, along with true, real life issues and drama (even if it’s fiction), lots of sex, drugs and a shocking tragedy that needs solving makes this a definite winner in my eyes. The conversations with the characters were so natural and flowed well, like how real people talk and act. The author holds back nothing in terms of the seedy underbelly of human nature and sexual desire/perversions/kinks, etc… even though at times I did grow a bit weary of the sex scenes as they started to feel repetitive-- I think it could have been toned down some and we still would have gotten the point. But there is definitely more to this book than just meets the eye… had a lot more emotional depth than I was expecting, and these are some of the more interesting characters I’ve encountered lately. This book will affect you on many levels, so just know that going in. I would certainly recommend to fans of erotic thrillers and psychological suspense.

A powerfully written and richly evocative look at life from a different perspective (that of a working prostitute) and the different ways people react to unthinkable situations, infused with some horrific events, complex relationships, personal struggles, and one sister’s quest to avenge her slain sister. This powerhouse of a story is equally packed with action and emotion, and is sure to please even the pickiest of literary readers. I felt a great connection with the characters as viewed through the lens of our main protagonists, (Lilian and Vivian), but there are other strong characters as well and thought the narrative was clean and crisp, descriptive, but not overdone. Great writing, memorable characters, and a bold attempt at capturing many realistic, yet dark elements in modern life made “The Sex Tourist” by Olivia Wild a definite hit for me. Best recommended for older readers due to some sensitive scenes and events.

From the opening pages of “The Sex Tourist” by Olivia Wild I thought it would be different from the books I’ve been reading lately but I was wrong…. This book is unlike ANYTHING I’ve ever read! Ms. Wild sets of the scene and characters in a skillful way that not only draws us right in, but creates great visualizations (like we are watching a show on tv or a movie) and elicits genuine emotional reactions. I truly cared about the characters’ fates, and was truly surprised at some turns of events. But beneath the surface is a deeper story that is far more complex, intelligent, and profound than the summary would suggest. An interesting and diverse cast of characters, along with several intriguing plotlines interwoven against unique real-life setting makes this a memorable read for me. Highly recommend. Adults only.

4.5 stars Holey moley, this book was terrific! Once I started reading I didn’t want to stop until I’d finished the whole thing. It was all I could do though not to rush it… this isn’t a ‘quick-easy beach read” but more like something you sink back with and let it take you away from your safe, ordinary world for a while. I enjoyed Olivia Wild’s literary “voice” and style of writing rapid-quick character dialogue who progressed the plot without all the “telling” narrative prose so many rookie authors make the mistake of doing. The interweaving plotlines were intelligent, shocking and at times taboo (I’ll never look at Empire Strikes Back the same way again!) well-developed and not predictable, and (most of) the characters were all genuine and interesting in their own right and well-written---they all felt very real, not like cliché figures. I have to commend Ms. Wild on the way that she managed to tell not only a great story, but did so in a way that I didn’t feel like I’ve read the story a million times before. Sure it’s a book about a prostitute and her subsequent murder and search for the killer, but it has so much emotional complexity and depth I’d love to read more from her in the future! Highly recommend to fans of thrillers/suspense with a strong sexual/psychological element, or anyone who enjoys a riveting, emotionally engaging book that will shock and surprise you.

this was the first book I’ve read by this author Olivia Wild, but I certainly hope it’s not the last. She has an incredible talent for writing descriptive and life-like scenes that really bring the characters to life with natural sounding narrative and good action, even when being cringe- worthy or even downright shocking at times. I like that this book didn’t feel stale or derivative of anything I’ve ever read before, which I thought it might be as I’ve read a few of these ‘based on true story’ suspense type books before. But this was nothing like those. It is a hefty, and at times very disturbing read that covers a lot of territory, but does so with remarkable depth considering the heavy subject matter at times. It is deep and dark, original, jaw-dropping, surprising, sad, and inspiring… all the qualities I look for in a good book, and it delivered an emotional win in the end. Recommended for ages 18+.

I admit I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into in deciding to read this book, because admittedly I do tend to lean towards the paranormal/fantasy romance elements of literature because I enjoy the make-believe parts. A (true) book about sex tourism and a murdered sex worker? Probably not my usual fare. But I was intrigued by the writing sample and the way that I felt an almost immediate connection to not only the characters (especially “Leila”), but with the way that Olivia Wild was writing them – such raw honesty, grit and authenticity… they almost demanded that I get to know them better, which I did. I found myself just wanting to read more… and more… and more… and I couldn’t believe it when I realized I was totally hooked, and I felt transported to another world just by experiencing the lives of these incredible characters who are so true to life and authentic, yet unlike any I’ve met before. Dark, damaged, flawed, and with secrets that come back to haunt, this story could have been another cliché erotic thriller, but it was far from it because Wild made the characters unique and it never felt contrived. I didn’t guess the ending, and I usually see these things coming. Really glad I took a chance on this one. Recommend for adults only

just a heads up…when starting “The Sex Tourist” by Olivia Wild, make sure you don’t have anywhere you need to be or anything you need to do because you won’t want to stop reading until you’ve finished it all!! Trust me on this! The book starts off with a very enticing beginning setting the stage and tone for the book and how Lily (and the others) story is going to be different than perhaps what we are used to reading about…and just keeps going from there. Warning: this book holds nothing back in terms of sex and the ‘behind the scenes’ of real ‘working girl’ experiences so not for the prudish or faint of heart. The characters and storylines are so well-developed and fully fleshed out you feel like you know them personally, and I think what I liked the most about this book was just the overall feel the author managed to create where it felt intimate, like a close friend was telling me this really crazy story that I didn’t want to stop listening to. The writing is very descriptive and you can picture everything perfectly. There are some surprising twists and some parts that really catch you off guard – some shocking and some sad… but that just made this book even more addicting. Absolutely Recommend.

this was an emotional whirlwind rollercoaster that I was not expecting. LOVE these characters, even the ‘bad ones’ ha! There is a wide supporting cast (not including all the crazy and kinky ‘punters’) and I enjoyed watching the relationships develop (and dissolve) along the way, and see how it all is connected with Lily, even in ways that we don’t initially suspect. There are several interweaving suspenseful and sexual plotlines always at play here, and kept me interested to see it through to the end. I’m not sure how I felt about the switch to the second-person narrative towards the end, I can see how the author might have though she was making us a part of the story, but for me it was really jarring and annoying. Pretty clean editing throughout and the ending was what we could hope for. Recommend for mature readers due to explicit sex, language, violence and other adult subject matter.

this is an excellent book that captured my attention from the beginning, pulled me in, and never once let go. Each scene was so descriptive we feel like we are there with “Leila” and Vivian and the other characters… This is a great blend of fact and fiction and you can tell the author knows the business well, and while it is a bit different from normal novels – this is really ‘2 books in 1’ (and feels that way) it flowed smoothly from one to the next… never a “dull part” where you get bored or want to skip ahead… in fact totally the opposite with the various interweaving plotlines and going from Lily/Leila’s dark and troublesome life, to later her sister’s quest for finding the source of her murder. The descriptions were very strong, and I mean with the author’s word choice… vivid and powerful with a nice literary slant, and while I do think at times some of the dialogue and conversations weren’t really necessary—more chit-chat that did little to advance the plot or the tension— it was authentic and real. Love that it was written in first person present as it added real urgency to the scenes (although later when it switched to second-person present I didn’t like it at all – was very weird…) I felt like I was genuinely inside Leila’s and Vivian’s heads experiencing the world through their eyes, for better or worse. They have demons to overcome, and some actually reappear in to make things worse… I thought the ending seemed a little abrupt, but I liked the epilogue. I would read more from Olivia Wild in the future as she has a natural gift for creating a well-thought out story and bringing memorable characters to life in an unpredictable and unforgettable way. Adults only.

4.5 stars I really liked this book, “The Sex Tourist” by Olivia Wild. I thought it was excellently written (except for a very confusing part in the beginning where the POV inexplicably switches form Leila to Vivian when meeting Paul even though it is still “leila’s” story…the time jump doesn’t make sense to me at all) and while there were some minor editing/grammar things, it was nothing too major. It kept my attention from the spicy opening to the satisfying ending, although I admit after the first chapter I wasn’t really sure if I really wanted to continue. It is quite graphic in terms of the sex worker industry and holds nothing back so you should know that in going in. I admit I was a bit shocked at what I was reading a few times but I was very glad I continued on because this book was incredible. It is not a quick read nor should it be. There are too many important events and experiences here to gloss over so the author takes her time in carefully developing the various storylines so that we the readers are thoroughly invested the whole way through, first through Leila’s POV, then on the second book through Vivian’s. I liked Ms. Wild’s writing style very much, and found myself completely lost in this dark and twisted and sexy world she recanted night after night. Was almost disappointed when I was done, but the ending gave the emotional satisfaction I look for in a great book, which is rare for me these days. Well done. Recommend to fans of erotic thrillers/suspense or anyone who just enjoys an entertaining, well-written story with lots of drama, suspense, and of course sex… and you actually feel like you are a part of the action unfold.

This book “The Sex Tourist” by Olivia Wild seems to have something of everything… seriously. Sex, drama, romance, danger, secrets, personal struggles, family life, humor, and shocking behavior… but I was impressed by the seamless narrative transitions and the way that we are able to experience the story through different perspectives without it feeling “head-hopping” (my pet peeve!), and while I’m not usually a fan of reading about so much graphic sex, here is not only worked without feeling gratuitous, but it really added to the depth of the characters, especially “Leila”. It’s an eye-opening glimpse into the sex worker industry, and definitely has its more shocking and even upsetting scenes. The writing was so fluid and had great pacing…. Always found myself reading for longer than I planned to, as there was never a good place to just stop—especially towards the end of book 2. Despite its title, I think “The Sex Tourist” will have wide ranging appeal due to the unique combination of fiction wrapped around fact. It’s a darn good read as we get swept up in the mystery of Lily’s killer… although due to the adult subject matter it’s best suited for mature readers. I can see fans of erotic drama and suspense gobbling it up.

this book was AMAZING. I was completely pulled in from the opening pages and was intrigued that it was ‘inspired by real events’. I’ve always had a fascination with the sex-worker industry so this book seemed like one I’d enjoy… and while it had its darker moments and some tragic events, it was so powerful and moving and completely knocked my socks off! I enjoyed the personality of the different characters and the way the author Olivia Wild divided it into two ‘books’ – the first being inspired by the deceased Lilian, the second continued by her twin Vivian. We feel transported not only into their unique and interesting lives, but their experiences and it is fascinating to watch the dynamic unfold with the other characters, from the first part with the “punters” (men who use prostitutes) and the second book when Viv is trying to find her sister’s killer.. I thought that overall the book was very well written even though there were some minor punctuation mistakes here and there, it was no big deal (I’ve seen worse) and even though I did wonder on occasion where exactly the story was going, it was interesting to see how it all tied together in the end, which I loved! I was really impressed and would recommend this book to fans of erotica/psychological thrillers. Heavy adult content.
