Fast paced and full of action. The only problem with Patrick Carrs books are the time is spend sucked in to them. I find all of his books very difficult to put down!

Everyone has those authors – when someone asks you for a recommendation – they’re the top names to spill out of your mouth. When asked why you like them, you can try to name things like excellent style, plot, or characters, but it’s really all of those things, and yet none of them at once. It’s that otherness, that quality you can’t pin down, but that resonates so strongly with you. Most simply put, the way you read, they write.
“The Shattered Vigil” has more of everything from the previous Darkwater Saga book – more world building, more character history, more twists. There is never a moment where the reader knows what is coming next, as nothing is ever revealed as you would think. This is edge-of-your-seat storytelling at it’s finest.
The story has so much going on, so many plot threads weaving and looping back on themselves, with each character getting their chance to carry the narrative. I really enjoyed that aspect, that through the individual adventures of each character, we begin to see just how vast the fight really is, and how it will impact their entire world, not just one kingdom, not just one story.
There is well-timed humor, deeply poignant moments, and pulse-racing-page-flipping action, all led by characters I don’t want to leave at the end of the work. In short, I crave the next installment!

Remind me why I read series before they’re complete?! WHY?! It’s a killer when the series is so well done because as you turn those final pages, when more questions come, stakes are raised and the unexpected happens, you also know you’re going to have to wait a year. Boooooo!
You know it’s a job well done when you read book one over a year ago, but weren’t lost when you started book two. Y’all ever had that happen? You’re really excited for the next book and as you start reading, you think “wait, who are these people?” And then it’s about 100 pages before it all starts coming back. Not so with this series!
I was able to jump right back into the story and Carr continues to raise the bar. Each book he writes gets better and while I really enjoyed his first series, I’m loving this one.
Not only is the story creative, there’s complex characters beyond the normal. That’s why I love fantasy! There’s plenty of the unexpected, making the title quite fitting.
There’s some intense and hard parts, but I believe they fit the story and play a role to the people and the story. It doesn’t make it any less intense though. I also loved this quote: “Because I’ve yet to see mankind make a mistake that it was unwilling to repeat.”
If you enjoy fantasy, I highly recommend getting book one and then this one. I wouldn’t mind seeing it in a movie form either!

An incredible good versus evil fantasy novel!
I thoroughly enjoyed returning to the fantasy land that this author has crafted. The characters are so well developed and presented that I connected with them and felt their frustration as they were trying to sort out the mystery of where the danger was coming from.
The plot was filled with a lot of twists and turns that really made me focus my attention on the story to follow what was going on. This is a great book to get lost in and lose track of time.

This novel, The Shattered Vigil, is the second in the trilogy. I think readers should really read the first book before reading this second one, or they would quickly become confused. There are a lot of characters to keep track of, and the action sweeps the reader into the story really quickly if the first book has already been read. I enjoyed this book very much. I think it is even better than the first, except that I felt the first book had a firmer ending than this one. The story is mainly told in first person by the main character, Willet Dura, but there are also chapters in third person focused on other characters. I didn't have any trouble switching between characters in this fashion. I especially enjoyed learning a bit more about Bronwyn's character. The book has plenty of action, and some of the questions from the first book are resolved, or expounded upon. Of course, there is still a third book to come, so not everything is resolved yet, and I really can't wait to read the next novel. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy.

If possible this second book in the series is even better than the first and the ending leaves the reader wondering what comes next. The Shattered Vigil is the perfect name for this book as it describes the book in three words. And, yes, you do have to read the first book to fully appreciate this series.
The writing style of Patrick Carr is fantastic as it draws one into the story - one can easily see why he is an award-winning writer. If you enjoy fantasy that has a spiritual undercurrent get ready to be transported to a world where the lines between darkness and light are become harder to discern.

The Shattered Vigil is a deep, epic tale!
In this second installment of The Darkwater Saga, the Vigil is racing the clock, trying to fight against the evil that revealed itself during Bas-solas. If you enjoy a story with layers upon layer upon twists upon right hooks, then you will adore this book! I really like how Patrick Carr is able to weave keen observations about life and deep, spiritual truths into the story. I loved the increased roll of the urchins. And invisible, zombie-like people? Well done, Patrick Carr. Well done.
The writing style is different, and sometimes I felt like it pulled me out of the story. There are a lot of descriptions and personal musings, and it left me wanting more dialogue and action. While the plot is superb, this is the kind of book that I need to break into smaller chunks.
Three Stars. Despite feeling pulled out of the story, I am invested in this epic tale. I want to know how it ends!

You would definitely want to read the first book, The Shock of Night, before reading The Shattered Vigil. While each book (thus far) deals with a specific problem, the events of the second book are built on an important foundation laid in the first book.

This is a high octane - deep despair - strong sarcasm - assured darkness that is so steeped in its evil that they thought they were rid of it but they could never fully get rid of it. This story is a battle of the minds, wills, and powers that be, There is a lot of death and even the horror in death - you must be aware of that - The book has parallel stories with stories in the Bible - which is awesome - when you open the book - the book says - hello my name is The Shattered Vigil - what is yours? well we are going on a journey would you like to come along? yes - good here we goooooooooooooooo and so you go - and you are on for a major ride - you get so invested into the characters that you cry when they cry and you actually laugh when they laugh - you have your family say - what is so funny? The vigil is in charge of seeking out and killing the evil - which they already thought they killed it all but apparently they didn't. What happens next? I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I received a copy of THE SHATTERED VIGIL by Patrick W. Carr from Bethany House in exchange for an honest review. It is a great, thick book – my favorite kind of epic fantasy adventure. It sucks you right in and doesn’t let you go.
This is part of the Darkwater Saga – book two to be exact. I’m new to the works of Patrick W. Carr, but he now has a fan in me. I hadn’t read book one, but I will look for it now. I also see there is a novella I was have to check out.
This isn’t a happy go lucky story, so if that is what you are looking for, you might want to find something different. This is dark and gritty. Some parts of the story are hard to read. They are raw and real; the entire book is intense. The characters prove that you can fight on in the most difficult of situations. I don’t recommend reading this before bed. The intensity will keep you up and the complex situations will keep you pondering. There is, of course, also love, and there is some hope.
I recommend this series to fans of dark epic fantasy. You won’t be disappointed if you give THE SHATTERED VIGIL a chance.
