Overview

The Silver Spoon by Editors of Phaidon Press

The Silver Spoon is the most influential and successful cookbook in Italy. Origniallly published in 1950, it became an instant classic. Considered to be essential in every household, it is still one of the most popular wedding presents today. The Silver Spoon was conceived and published by Domas, the design and architectural magazine famously directed by Gio Ponti from the 1920s to the 1970s. A group of chefs were commissioned to collect hundreds of traditional recipes from the different Italian regions and make them available for the first time to a wider audience. In the process, they updated ingredients, quantities and methods to suit contemporary tastes and customs, at the same time preserving the memory of ancient recipes for future generations. They also included modern recipes from some of the most famous Italian chefs, resulting in a style of cooking that appeals to the gourmet as well as the occasional cook.

A comprehensive and lively book, its simple and user-friendly format makes it both accessible and a pleasure to read. It provides an introduction to every course, and an explanation of the main type of ingredients. Never translated before, The Silver Spoon has now been adapted to an international market, with every recipe checked for suitability, measurements converted and methods rewritten to accommodate cultural difference, yet maintaining the authenticity of real Italian cooking. The book will be released in two separate editions for the UK and US markets, each with its own measurements, vocabulary and spelling.

The new layout emphasises its contemporary appeal and the colour coding of each section simplifies the process of cross-referencing ingredients and methods. A section with original menus from the 15 most famous Italian chefs of the last 50 years has been expanded to include original menus from Italian celebrity chefs working outside Italy. This is a substantial and prestigious cookbook that will share the bookshelves with other titles such as The Joy of Cooking, and Larousse Gastronomique, another classic of national cuisine. With over 2,000 recipes illustrated with speically commissioned artwork and photography, the book is destined to become a classic in the Italian cooking booklist for the international market.

I reluctantly added a copy of this book to my cookbook library. I have more than a dozen excellent Italian cookbooks and I couldn't imagine why I would ever need another volume. I was wrong. This book stands alone as an authoritative compendium of dishes from all of the major regions of Italy. The book translates well and the recipe instructions are straightforward and relatively easy to follow. If you are serious about Italian food, this book is a must have!

This is the cookbook that all other cookbooks want to be. I challenge anyone who reads this review to find better. Not only is it packed with a ton of all your Italian favorites, it also has a lot of recipes that are not Italian, e.g. a recipe for mayo. It has recipes for preparing things I didn't know exist. Aside from the recipes, it also has lots of useful and interesting information. I wish I could write a book review that was half as good as this cookbook.

This book is fantastic! It is a large volume separated into sections for example antipasti, pasta, meats, vegetables, deserts etc etc. The photos of the food are very realistic. The recipes are (mostly) simple with wholesome ingredients. What a celebration of Mediterranean food!

Everyone should have this one on their cookbook shelf. I ordered it for a gift and now have to get another for me. Best and most complete book I've seen and the recipes are delicious. No wonder it's been a hit for so many years.

I received Silver Spoon as a gift in January 2006 from someone that knew we loved to cook and especially Italian. From the moment I read through it to the first recipe I knew this was a cookbook like no other. I felt like the first time I read Mastering The Art of French Cooking "ahh, this is the way you prepare this dish". You will love Silver Spoon for the fully explained recipes and the simple preparations of most everything Italian and then some. No wonder this is touted as the only Italian Cookbook you'll ever need... it is! Enjoy, Mangia and Bon Appetito!

This book is an essential resource guide for cooking well translated and organized for ease of use. I would imagine that between Silver Spoon and Marcella Hazan, you will not need another Italian cookbook in your library. Have been reading it for about a week, and can not wait to start cooking.

This simple and user friendly cookbook is a true gem. It has 1,000-pages, and 2,000 recipes. This wonderful Italian cooking encylopedia has been adapted for an international audience and presented in a new, user-friendly format. It takes its rightful place beside The Joy of Cooking and Larousse Gastronomique. Since 1950 Italian families have often presented this cookbook to new brides.
