In THE SKY IS FALLING, an ordinary man, Dave, finds himself at the center of an intractable problem: as he looked up at the sky, he could make out a rift, and beyond that a hole where a small patch had no color, and yet the sky there was not black. There were no stars there, though points of light were clustered around the edges, apparently retreating.
