The Slave Master's Son by Tiana Laveen

The 1800s for Black Americans was a time of forced servitude, anguish, heartbreak, and strength of faith. John, a wealthy Richmond, Virginia slave owner's son, and Hannah, the Negro daughter of a protective and loving mother, grew up as playmates, sharing their lives and dreams. Soon a sweet and tumultuous love affair began that grew so strong John would risk everything before relinquishing it. With his reputation in jeopardy, Hannah in his heart, and a father and country firmly against him, John must overcome obstacle after obstacle, some involving incredible violence and cruelty. Along the way he discovers shocking family secrets, buried for years. This historic romance raises the question - Can the love between a beautiful, young slave woman and a wealthy, Confederate slave master's son endure the prevailing ideology of their time?

Every part of this book worked to me. Every twist and turn was well placed and flowed well. I felt that the chemistry between the two main characters in this historic novel was beautiful. I enjoyed their dialogue, how they survived all odds to stay together and the ending was simply lovely. I really enjoyed the attention to detail. I don't want to give the story away, but as a history buff, I applaud this writer with her attempts to make the talking realistic. It really was based on the actual letters and history books I've read during this time period in the form of correspondences that I form this opinion. It is a difficult thing to capture, but I'd give this writer a solid B+ on that aspect of it because it is really hard to do, especially if you have to mix in southern slang of that time period. Some people may not understand that this is in fact how many people spoke during that time and you'd only know that if you researched the time period and the place where these two grew up. I've wanted to read a book like this for some time and I think the writer managed to discuss a really difficult subject manner in a discerning and realistic way. The sex scenes fit the novel properly. They were very sensual without being too over the top and they were well placed. The story is what sold me though. This story is very well written and I felt like I was right there with the characters. John, who is the slave master's son and falls in love with Hannah, a slave, are a couple that you just can't get out of your head after the book is over. They grew up together as children which makes this even more believable. I could not find really anything in the book that didn't have a purpose for being there. It is one of those kind of books where it makes you put your thinking cap on. Sometimes I would stop and re-read something and a light bulb would come on like OK now I see why this writer wrote what she did two chapters ago. Every little detail she writes shows us something else but you have to be paying attention and I really like that. This writer forces the reader to enjoy the story, but also get a story within a story. As treacherous as he was, Master Stewart was a character that I won't soon forget. Lovely novel and I highly recommend it.

The title of my review says it all. I have read many romance novels, but never one like this. The premise, the characters, the story -- it has it all. The characters have a lot of depth which is refreshing for a romance novel. Don't worry, there are a fair share of steamy sex scenes as well. I especially enjoyed the character of Hannah. She is so complex and resilient. For me, she is the real driver of this story. I read in another person's review that the subplot between John and Master Stewart wasn't appreciated. I guess I'm different because I thought it enriched the drama and tension between all the characters. Overall, I'm happy this book is a permanent addition to my Nook library.

What a lovely tale. I really like historical romances and this was so sweet. I liked the cover of the book that is what drew me in but the writing was so well done and the ending was simply breathtaking. I highly recommend this book.

Magnificent! What a book. The cover had me thrown for a loop at first. I thought it was going to be your typical interracial erotic novel but that couldn't be further from the truth. This was more then the typical romance novels I'm used to reading. Normally the entire book will be about the man chasing the girl and finally at the end they profess their love for one another and then the book ends. The book starts off with them loving each other and it takes you through all their trials and tribulations. I LOVED how John stood up for her and their love no matter what anybody, especially his Father, had to say about it. I loved how Hannah was so intelliegent for her age and independent when necessary. Wonderful well written book. I highly recommed it.

John, the slave master's son knows how to fight for and treat a woman. You will wish you had a man like this after you read this novel. It is set during the civil war and during slavery in America. You can imagine what they had to go through to stay together. This writer did a good job with keeping me entertained. At times John talked too much in the book, but on the flip side of that, I liked how he jumped on people that rightfully deserved it. He was not scared of anyone, not even his powerful father. This is a must read and I will be recommending it to my students.

Touchy topic- consensual relationship between a slave and her master's child as they grow up. If you're looking for detailed sex like in this author's other two novels then you won't like this because she doesn't write explicitly in this and that makes sense considering what it is about. She tried something we hadn't seen so for that alone she deserves some credit. I enjoyed cross climax ii and this book very much and I want to read more of what Tiana will be writing. I like that she doesn't write like other authors and I like how there are surprises through out the book. Good job.

This is the latest selection of my book club. I'm not generally interested in romance novels, but this one is special. The characters aren't simply vehicles to get you from one sex scene to the next. There's a REAL story here AND the sex scenes are spicy. I will definitely be purchasing her other two books.

I heard about this author from a friend of mine. She's new, but already stands out from others. Her writing style really draws you in. I have read many romance novels over the years, this one ranks near the very top.

I was blown away! Don't see too many romance novels like this one -- very unique plot. My book club appreciated the discussion questions at the end. Keep 'em coming, Tiana!

I really liked this book. Had a great mix of drama, romance, passion, strength and determination between lovers, and those involved. I cried, laughed, and became angry at the ignorance of people during that time. The main characters were wonderful. I definitely would recommend reading if you're interested in love conquers all stories.

I really loved this fantastic historical tale. The slave and the master's son grew up together as best friends. The story explores what happens when these two fall in love set against the laws and mores of a segregated society. Truly beautiful love story that will have your rooting for the characters.
