Overview

The Solitary Seed is an example of meditative literature, designed to enhance the artist’s role inside his spiritual realm of creativity. Written by full-time painter Bradley Widman, this book delivers us into a different form of consciousness as we commune with the eternal aesthetic self. It brings us into the light of the artist's existence; and at the same time, experiencing Widman’s highly allegorical overtures of aesthetic theory; paintings and poetry. The Solitary Seed is a poetic analysis of art that brings each of us into the fullness of our own creative and unique natures. It is an experience in the exploration of the allegorical. Widman infuses spirituality and art in his unique way, by which he communicates to young aspiring artists, revealing to them their own nobility through the planting of aphoristic seeds of wisdom. The result is an artist enlightened.

About the Author

Bradley is a self-taught painter living in Amherst, New York. He paints full-time, exclusively with oil on canvas. His works typically utilize a pallet limited to earth tones of green, red, mustard and brown. He produces two to three canvasses per month and includes framing of his own construction in each painting. A disciplined and monastic lifestyle is manifest through his work. Figures, some of the human form representing infants through adult age predominate, and in some cases take on a distinctive, specific form such as anthropomorphic deer, birds, or monks in over-sized robes. Nudes, of both sexes, are shown in organically geometric and ornamental adornment.

The overall effect conveying spiritually and psychologically charged allegory. The structure of his completed works provides an architecture which serves as a habitat within which the figures can play out roles. Given this scheme, the viewer is brought to an esoteric territory that lies beyond a normal mode of perception, and into which we might ultimately be drawn by Widman's overtures. This is part of his intent-to give us, the viewers, an opportunity to "visit" a different consciousness.

His works are whimsical, as well as sophisticated. A love for antique toys seem to have a psychological theme and calls us from a lingering childhood. His work has a distinct architectural quality made up of brilliant geometric patterns and symbols. The works are a glorious renewal and celebration of a vintage soul.

From an early age, Widman studied the works of Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele extensively and grew in a similar tradition. His writings followed his love and passion for the spiritual. It developed itself into a symbiotic relationship feeding off one another. Thus, The Solitary Seed was created.

Widman draws much of his inspiration from the Arts and Crafts Movement. He is a Juried Artist in the Arts and Craftsmen Guild on the Roycroft Campus in East Aurora New York.
