Overview

Few recording projects in recent years have been as ambitious or successful as the complete Schubert and Schumann lieder editions spearheaded by pianist Graham Johnson. This fourth volume in the Schumann series continues in two traditions: a rich and thorough exploration of both the much-celebrated and largely unknown aspects of the composer's music, and a venue to showcase promising young singers, in this case mezzo-soprano Stella Doufexis and baritone Oliver Widmer. Songs based on the poetry of Friedrich Rückert -- better known for Mahler's later settings of his verse -- are the focus of this album, though not exclusively; most of the music dates from after Schumann's great year of song, 1840, and shows the composer in transition. Schumann's wife Clara was a fine composer in her own right, and her songs are here as well, including her contributions to "Liebesfrühling," Op. 37, the couple's joint cycle of songs and duets on Rückert's poems. Doufexis has a lighter voice than many mezzos; she sparkles in the comic "Volksliedchen" from Op. 51 and ends the disc with a touching account of Clara Schumann's "Die gute Nacht, die ich dir sage." Widmer is a robust baritone; his account of the three "Romanzen und Balladen," Op. 45 -- easily the best-known songs here -- is menacing in "Der Schatzgräber" and brashly swaggering in "Frühlingsfahrt" and "Abends am Strand." Along with his fastidiously thought-out accompaniment at the piano, Graham Johnson has written a hefty book of program notes that are up to his usual erudite standards. As always in this series, a recording both to enjoy immediately and to learn from over time.
