The story line was promising...just not executed very well. I feel like some parts were confusing and scattered.

5 stars = I freaking LOVED this book Wow! That was an intense read. I think I loved it. I’m not sure if I actually know what I think I know or not. Confused? So am I. But it’s a good confused. The Sordid Promise is not your typical romance. Heck, the author even tells you that, and warns you that it’s not a happy story. She even hints that it’s not a romance, but I have to disagree – it is the love story of two dark and broken people. Because the book is a psychological thriller, it will not be an easy read for many people. There were several times while I was reading that I thought I knew what was coming, but then the Ms. Lane would take the story off in an entirely different direction. I enjoy reading a book that does the unpredictable and keeps me thinking and engaged – The Sordid Promise does this very well.  This is the kind of book that is very hard to review because as you read it and secrets are revealed, you forget when you learned them and whose version of the truth was revealed first. This is a psychological thriller, not in the mystery/who-done/it sense, but rather in that there are just so many secrets being kept, so I was constantly wondering if what I knew was the truth or not. As the reader, I rarely had the “inside scoop” and I think this is why it made it so easy for me to connect with Nikki – I felt her confusion and frustration. This of course only seemed to heighten the feelings of anxiety and attraction she felt toward Eric. The “moth to the flame” feeling was so palpable while reading that I couldn’t wait for her to get burned because the level of sexual tension between Eric and Nikki was unreal. Suffice it to say, Ms. Lane can write sex scenes – the good, the bad, and the ugly. Ms. Lane flat out tells potential readers that this is a twisted, complicated, and broken story and she’s not kidding, it’s not a marketing ploy, and this is not a book for everyone. If you are a fan of dark reads, take her advice one step farther and download the sample from an online retailer to get a taste of the book; granted it’s just a taste, but you’ll get a glimpse into the brokenness that is Nikki. I did and was immediately taken with Nikki and had to read her story. While I never anticipated the extent to which the main characters are broken, I am so glad I got a chance to read The Sordid Promise and was relieved to discover that it is book one of the series, even more relieved to learn that book two is the continuation of Eric and Nikki’s story. And so the stalking begins as I wait eagerly for the release of Sordid Descent in November.  I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.  Reviewed by Angela at Crystal's Many Reviewers!
