The Splendid Table's How to Eat Supper: Recipes, Stories, and Opinions from Public Radio's Award-Winning Food Show by Lynne Rossetto Kasper, Sally Swift

A fresh take on weeknight cooking from The Splendid Table's Lynne Rossetto Kasper and Sally Swift

As loyal listeners know, Lynne and Sally share an unrelenting curiosity about everything to do with food. Their show, The Splendid Table, looks at the role food plays in our lives—inspiring us, making us laugh, nourishing us, and opening us up to the world around us. Now they have compiled all the most trenchant tips, never-fail recipes, and everyday culinary know-how from the program in How to Eat Supper, a kitchen companion unlike any other.

This is no mere cookbook. Like the show, this book goes far beyond the recipe, introducing the people and stories that are shaping America’s changing sense of food. We don’ t eat, shop, or cook as we used to. Our relationship with food has intensified, become more controversial, richer, more pleasurable, and sometimes more puzzling. How to Eat Supper gives voice to rarely heard perspectives on food—from the quirky to the political, from the grassroots to the scholarly, from the highbrow to the humble—and shows the essential role breaking bread together plays in our world.

How to Eat Supper takes you through a plethora of inviting recipes simple enough to ensure success even if you’ve never cooked before. And if you are experienced in the kitchen, you’ ll find challenging new concepts and dishes to spark your imagination.

This is by far the best cookbook I've ever purchased. The recipes are unique, but easy and don't require a "gourmet pallete" to appreciate. The cookbook is full of fun facts, anectotes and other useful information. It reads like a novel. I've purchased four of these books now (including my own). They make great gifts.

This is my new favorite cookbook. I've made SO many things out of it already. LOVE the grape/onion tart, the panna cotta, the little fudge cakes . FRIED hardboiled eggs??? OMG they are so fabulous. My copy is dogeared already!!!! This goes on the shelf right next to Barefoot Contessa in Paris. A great every day AND party cookbook.

Remember when everyone had a big Sunday dinner after church? Later that day, on Sunday night, there would be something lighter.... supper! This cookbook is perfect for a meal like that (or a weeknight meal.) The recipes are simple, but thoughtful. The book is fun to browse and the ingredients used are often combined in unusual ways.

This is a terrific cookbook written in the spirit of the NPR radio show of the same name. It is engaging, fun, and practical. The recipes are for the most part intriguing to read, simple to make, and without exception delicious to eat! The tips and information about food and cooking in general are interesting and caused me to feel excited about cooking again. Bravo!!

If you need a cookbook to make cooking more fun - this is it! The cooking tips, quotes and bits of info are interesting and fun to read while searching for the perfect recipe. And there are plenty of those. I've yet to make a dish from this book that isn't absolutely delicious. Most are also easy. The recipes combine familiar foods in unfamiliar ways and introduce some ingredients that may be new to you. It's as much about the "art" of eating really good food as it is about cooking it! A must for all foodies.

As a former caterer and still-avid cook, when I saw this book, I grabbed it. I like to read a cookbook--in other words, give me cooking tips, great stories and exciting recipes! Food does do much more than simply nourish us. How and what we eat has also changed so much in just a couple generations! Sometimes my husband and I talk about the meals we ate growing up (usually with disbelief!) I have not tried any of the dishes yet, but numerous ones have already been tagged to make asap. Most look simple to make with very clear and concise directions. I will report back!
