The Star Beast by Robert A. Heinlein

Lummox has been the pet of the Stuart family for generations. With eight legs, a thick hide and huge (and growing) size, Lummox is nobody's idea of man's best friend. Nevertheless, John Stuart XI, descendant of the starman who originally brought Lummox back to Earth from a distant planet, loves him. John isn't about to let the authorities take his pet away and, with his best friend Betty, determines to save Lummox even if it takes leaving the life he's known forever. However, what John and Betty don't realize is that the survival of the Earth itself may depend on the true nature of The Star Beast.

An all-time great science fiction coming-of-age classic from seven-time Hugo winner and Dean of Science Fiction, Robert A. Heinlein.

A first contact story (e.g. 'Rendevous with RAMA', 'FOOTFALL', 'The Mote in God's Eye' to list a few legendary ones.) are the ET's and Close Encounters of literature that deal with meeting an alien lifeform for the first time. While this one doesn't rank with the forgoing for it's ledgendary status, like it's RAH juvenile kin 'Have Spacesuit Will Travel' it's probably far more fun. Like many RAH tales, he exhibits a genius for alternating the point of narrative between differing protagonists of the story weaving it all into one whole. In this tale, a boy and gal are trying to save their friendly but rambunctious 'Space Puppy' (just a few tons-- he's grown some in three generations of John Thomases), a bequest from the Boys' space explorer grandfather and father from the well-intentioned but mis-guided local authorities who are determined to terminate the beast. Meanwhile, there is an unrelated interstellar crises involving an new but deadly interstellar power that is possibly threatening to blow the solar system to hell, mixed in a disproving and unsupported mother who has never approved of the 'Lummox', no matter how cute and cuddly he was as an armored space puppy. Sigh. The plot possibilities boggle the mind, and RAH does not fail to deliver a jaw dropping connection between the governments problems (Saving man kind) and helping the most recent John Thomas to save his friendly pet (with his fondness for eating the neighbors roses, the national guards tanks, and a few other humorous morsels here and there.) But without giving away the meat of the plot, that ought to be enough to wet your appetite. Don't miss the main course, or 'Have Space Suit, Will Travel' either. The list above are all five stars too! General Heinlein: Tom Clancy, David Webber, Spider Robinson, and Stephen King all credit Heinlein as thier mentor. More need not be said about the three decade all time Sci-Fi Grand Master, but this. If you haven't read Heinlein, you haven't yet lived. First Sci-Fi to Movie, The recent topical hit movie Star Ship Troopers (a novel's always better, and RAH's SST is no exception), a perennial collective Best Seller (30 Million in print ten years ago!) Never off the shelves in even the poorestly sci-fi stocked book store, you can't go wrong! Pohl Anderson, Larry Niven, Issaac Asimov, Anne McCafferty, and dozens of other GrandMasters and Masters of Fantasy and Sci-Fi all gave way willingly to the 'Dean of Science Fiction'; He is and was a legend of American Literature. Perhaps only Hemingway and Clancy can challange his overall popularity. Don't miss the experiences!
