Magical bugs clean up the Earth in Sanchez’s picture book.

After the headlight on their traveling spaceship breaks, a group of colorful alien bugs called the Starbugz become lost. They land on a strange planet (Earth) and discover that it’s hot and its rivers are dried up. However, they’re delighted by its piles of trash—“Thingamajigs of all shapes and sizes”—and hope to find treasures to bring home to their kids. They collect a striped straw, a battery, and a soda can. Although Iwa is initially sad that she doesn’t find a suitable souvenir, she’s thrilled to find a lightbulb with which she can repair the spaceship. As the Starbugz pack up to leave, they decide to bring a big, additional mound of junk with them. Using magic, they enable Earth to “breathe again,” and with less trash piling up, the planet smells fresh and appears clean. Sanchez’s story is odd but engaging, and it effectively demonstrates the importance of reducing waste and employing recycling to protect the planet. His illustrations are vivid and creative, offering unique and detailed interpretations of various items in Earth’s trash piles. Some include useful context; for example, when a bug finds a “fancy fang-brush,” the image clarifies it as a toothbrush.

A colorful tale that cleverly highlights the importance of conservation.
