15-year-old Pepper Jones was shocked. The Maddocks, aliens that are kidnapping the best of the best humans on Earth (the best architect, the best artist, the best scientist, etc.), just kidnapped her parents. Two ordinary, run-of-the-mill school teachers. So, what were they the best at? Pepper and her best friend Parker wondered that, until they were met by a human-like cat-looking man. He says his name is Ando and that he is a Popoki (not a cat!) and that he was a friend of her parents – brilliant inventors from an academy on a different planet! Pepper and Parker go to the academy and hatch a plan. They plan on how to save her parents by finding the Starburst Juju, a powerful alien stone that can help free her parents. But Pepper and Parker are only two humans and they are up against an entire race of aliens. This was a great story. I loved all of the cool gadgets, especially the Orico. I really want one – they are bracelets that can do a bunch of things at a command. I love that the book made me think about some things. For example the story says all planets that can support life are about the same size, same distance from their sun, same temperature range, etc. compared to Earth – I never thought about it like that. But I guess that only goes for life-forms like us but what if there are other types of life… okay getting off topic… Back to my point – I like books that make me think! :) The characters in the book were developed well. The aliens were fun to read about. I like Ando. He is really interesting, and I would love to spend a day with him. Pepper is a great character – smart, realistic, and nice. I also liked Parker. He’s a great friend to Pepper, and an immature normal teenage boy. ;) I think that this book is awesome, but I am slightly sad that this is a stand-alone novel. It ended well though. I think Ms. Strang closed it very nicely. Ms. Strang has a great writing style. I think this is another cross over type book – one that advanced MG readers will love as well as younger YA readers. *NOTE I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

The Starburst Juju, written by first-time author Monica Strang, is an enticing young adult science fiction novel set in a time when most had lost hope and many were living in fear. The author introduces the main character Pepper, a typical teenage girl trying to make sense of the chaos and fear that exists all around her. After witnessing the abduction of her parents and narrowly escaping her own destruction, she is quickly thrust into solving the mystery behind her parents’ involvement with the alien abductions. Along the way she discovers her own hidden talents and gifts, and creates lasting relationships with her new-found friends. Pepper’s search for her parents is a coming-of-age adventure that will test old and new friendships, and one that will eventually force her to re-evaluate everything she thought was true. This is a must-read for anyone who enjoys young adult fiction that includes a first-time love, twists and turns and an ending that will leave you wanting more. The big question is, will there be a sequel?? We hope so!

Although I am not typically a fan of fantasy or YA books, this book grabbed and held my attention until the end, and I really enjoyed it. Could you imagine waking up one fateful day to find out your parents weren't who you thought they were? Pepper's parents are abducted by extraterrestrials and a wild adventure begins. We are taken on a fun ride in search of her parents with her best friend Parker at her side. Pepper needs to find the Starburst Juju and free her parents, which means traveling to different worlds and making all sorts of friends along the way. I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages. Can't wait for the sequel!

This was a science fiction and fantasy book geared for ya readers but I think appropriate for middle school age and up. Pepper the main character embarks on an amazing journey after aliens abduct someone very close to her. She grows and learns about herself on this journey while making new friendships and possible love. The characters are loveable and fun. The writing was great and the story had wonderful flow. I was transported to new worlds and the attention to detail from the scenery down to the food was superb. An energetic book with lots of heart.

Meet Pepper, a strong, courageous and lovable young woman faced with the task of trying to find and save her kidnapped parents in a vast new world full of creatures and people that become a part of your own imaginative world- one that you wont want to say good bye to in the end. This is fantasy storytelling at it's best! It's a story that adults and youth alike will love and fits comfortably along side favorite authors such as Scott Westerfield, Shannon Hale, Suzanne Collins and Christopher Paolini. Hope you enjoy this new discovery as much as I did!

This is a really great fantasy/science fiction novel! It was a really fun read and I had a hard time putting it down! The main characters were very endearing and the storyline was imaginative. The main character is a 14-yr old girl whose parents were abducted by extraterrestrials, and she vows to bring them home. She finds adventure, love, and lots of surprises along the way. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially young adults.

This is such a fun Sci-fi/fantasy/adventure story! The characters are so interesting and endearing, especially Pepper (the narrator) and her best friend Parker (I want a best friend like Parker - he's hilarious!). The other space beings and the worlds on which they live are so imaginative and descriptive, you feel like you're there with them. This is a story that makes you feel happy and one that's hard to put down. Highly recommended read!
