North London, 1976. It is the longest, hottest summer on record. The dustmen are on strike, the water is running out and the kids hate their parents.

Which bunch of idiots would think it a good idea to start a band?

Stench, Aroma, Smell, Haze and Fart might not have the sweetest nicknames in town, but these five have just finished their O-Levels and are on a mission to take their fledgling little band and get themselves a half decent gig. Songs are good, playing is getting better, Smell's voice is wicked, so what could possibly go wrong?

Aside from the National Front, smelly teens, the lead singer falling in love with the drummer and a double murder.

But this is 1976. It is not only a different decade, it is a different planet.

If you were a teen back then, you will lap up the nostalgia. If you are a teen now, you will wish you had been there.

The Stink. It was what the seventies were all about!

About the Author

C.C. Hogan was born in London and was a teenager in the seventies.

Since that time he has been a musician, composer, writer, occasional web designer and general media dogs body.

He writes everything in a North London accent, unsurprisingly!

Looking for a universal walk down memory lane during an era of upheaval, changing social values, and a new generation of rebellious youth? Hop aboard the time machine and let C.C. Hogan take you back in time to North London where a group of young musicians, decide to take their garage band into the spotlight. Centered on “Smell,” the main character, lead singer and song writer, the summer of 1976 will bring a coming of age, a budding romance and revelations that will make some bonds grow ever stronger. Even a double murder won’t stop this determined group of young people, but how will it affect their lives or their outlooks on life? The Stink by C.C. Hogan is a chaotic read, high on tension, with a rapid fire pace that brings the 70s back to life, or for those who weren’t there, it gives a good view of life for the youth of the times as the children of blue collar workers. Every generation has their form of rebellion, this one is no different, but for Smell, putting his feelings into words creates magic with his songs and his voice. Each member of the band has a unique presence that represents one of the social issues of the day. Often sarcastic and biting dialogue adds humorous moments as these young artists continue to search for their moment of fame. C.C. Hogan provides the attitude, the snark, the insecurities and the darker sides of life as well as the easy camaraderie of kindred souls. A fun read that will have you wishing you had the energy you had in the 70s or whenever you were a teen. The author’s English tone comes through with a clear, often irreverent and sharp voice. I received this copy from C.C. Hogan in exchange for my honest review.
