Overview

The Stone Boatmen by Sarah Tolmie

Tolmie toils a tale of three cities, separated by oceans, lost to one another long ago: the first, the city of rituals, of ceremonies; the second, the city of words, of poetry; and the third, the city of the golden birds, of dreams. In their harbors stand the stone boatmen, pointing outward toward the unknown. Now the birds are fostering a newfound relationship of the three cities of the ancestors, and the voyages of the ship Aphelion and its crew are beginning to rebuild the links.

About the Author

Sarah Tolmie is an Associate Professor in the English Department of the University of Waterloo. She received her PhD at Cambridge. Her work with virtual reality and dance explores links between movement and proprioception — the body's sense of itself and its limits in space — and narrative and poetic structures and pathways. She has been a member of the Kitchener collective Friends of the Floor Dance Theatre, dancing in and concept-designing shows for and with them. In 2011 she co-founded the Raw Nerve Research Group, a team of three researcher/dancers (consisting of Tolmie, an engineer, and a computer scientist) who lead participatory workshops helping people understand complex interactions through movement. A collection of her sonnets is forthcoming from Baseline Press in London.
