Millar presents a novel of love, lust, and internal struggle set in the world of the ultra-wealthy.

Kate Baumer is an executive advisor to Mike Creston, the extraordinarily “clean-cut, sexy, charming, and fit” wealthy CEO of Edison Energy, whom she calls “M.” As the story opens, Kate is in Switzerland for the company’s Christmas party and she perceives a change in M; he seems unusually distant. Between company events, M seeks out opportunities to have passionate sex with Kate, which has been the norm for eight of the nine years they’ve worked together: “After nine years, she would have expected things to change, but her heart still fluttered when she saw him, and their rendezvous always excited her.” However, no one else knows about their relationship, and this angers her: “She never wanted to be someone’s secret.” Christmas Eve in New York City finds Kate alone and lonely, and so she returns to her native Calgary, Alberta. Her sister, Margie, asks her to be her maid of honor for her upcoming wedding, and during the events leading up to the nuptials, she meets architect Brad, the cousin of Margie’s fiance, on a flight to New York. As this new relationship blooms, Kate must make a choice: M or Brad? Over the course of this romance novel, Millar works hard to weave a story of a disintegrating relationship together with one about the hope of a new love. She’s successful in making readers feel Kate’s anguish, as when she tells M, “I was tired of playing games, of your constant reminders that I was and always would be your dirty little secret.” Kate also affectingly thinks, “Come on, M, say it”—itbeing that he loves her—but is left disappointed. However, although Millar’s characters are well developed on an individual level, the relationships between Kate and M—and later, Kate and Brad—feel rather two-dimensional and predictable.

A sometimes entertaining but ultimately disappointing romance with a complicated protagonist.
