Overview

The String Quartet Tribute to Evanescence

Vitamin's String Quartet Tribute to Evanescence reworks nine tracks from the Arkansas band's major label debut Fallen, and proves that the elegiac grace apparent in that album was not simply a fluke of production or savvy marketing. Arranged for violin, viola, and cello, "Bring Me to Life," "Tourniquet," and especially "Going Under" become surging chamber anthems, while the skyward-climbing melody of "My Immortal" is made even more poignant by the tension between cello and violin. Quieter moments like "Hello" really show off the instruments' versatility, while "Whisper" retains the apocalyptic feel of its Fallen counterpart. It might have been a good idea to wait until Evanescence had more than one album readily available before issuing this string tribute, but the set will still be an interesting listen for any fan enamored of the group's goth-tinged sound.

I am sorry, but in this case nothing compares to the original.. The head banging originals are done no justice, just because using a cello doesn't compare to Ben Moody's chugging guitar. And the piano not being there is a huge setback, it is what makes the originals so great. And the violin can't replace Amy's voice. The best songs here are Haunted (Because it has okay sound) and Undertowe, which is not even an Evanescence song but is good anyway.. Another setback is that the cd doesn't include "Everybody's Fool" or "My Last Breath." But.. if you like classical music, give it a try...

This string quartet did a great job on arranging the songs. But I feel that they are trying to hard to mimic the acoustic effects of the guitars with too many staccatos and other string effects. They should just let the flow of the song go, and play more legato. Also, the counter melodies need to be better balanced, with the vocal parts being the dominant instruments. Other than that, I feel they did a good job. Overall, it's a great CD, and I hope more bands do these similar rearrangements for strings.
