Chapter One
Mommy Where Are You?Mommy where are you? You're not here and I can't confront you in the physical.
This is making me & the family miserable
I mean this literal so I how do I get at you.
She communicated, the same way you speak with our father GOD in the spiritual.
Mom now that you've gone what do you want me to do?
My mother said, Son, "Carry on tradition".
My thoughts, words, actions and habits will proved that I listened
They will prove that I listened when she spoke to me because this is who she wanted me to be.
A great man who lives his life according to a plan that includes treating my wife the way I want my
mother to be treated, love her like Christ love the church and continually repeat it.
Greet the elders the way the elders expect to be greeted so that after they pass away, the tradition will
preceded it.
She wants me to carry on tradition so that the present and future generations connect to one another
and there won't be gaps of communication between each other. No gaps between sisters and brothers or
father and mother we agree to disagree so the tradition will continue to go much further.
I will carry on tradition and play my role as a role model
so my son and daughters will have an example to follow.
They will do like I do and not only as I say
repetition and practice will make the tradition stay.
I will carry on the tradition and do my job
to make sure my children keep a relationship with GOD.
And I will carry on the tradition of education so my legacy will provide.
And give to my progeny cause this is what mommy wants the grand babies to see and comprehend about
their family.
When the baton exchanges from your hand to my hand I will pass on the tradition and make sure the
future generations understands their mission.
Teach them the 7 principles so they carry on tradition.
I will carry on tradition and teach the children to know who they are and love thyself, because having
self-value is one of the greatest wealth.
Always use positive energy it attracts more friends and protects best when combating negative energy
of your enemies
Carry on tradition and stay united with the family.
Carry on tradition and use your creativity
practice the arts write it down to help preserve the history of music because if you don't use it wasted
talent will cause you to lose it.
If you still want to see me my mother said, Son, you just have to remember me perceive the vivid
imagery and retrieve the happiest moments from your memory
"Ok mom, so to find you I have to have a vision", she said, "son close your eyes and I will appear in an
instant from a distance as long as you continue to pray and carry on tradition".
The Inspirations for Writing Matriarchs
The piece titled, Matriarchs, was originally supposed to be written for a family banquet that was held at the Saint Charles Skating rink in South Philadelphia about 3 years ago. My family put hosted a mother's day dinner/banquet for a family get together. Its purpose was to honor all the women in the family. This was the first time that this has ever happened when all the women from the eldest down to the youngest mothers were to be acknowledged at this function. I believe my Aunt Marion Zimmerman was the eldest in attendance at that time. She has passed since RIP. I found it in my spirit to write how much I appreciate the women in my family. It was even easier to write this because I believe around the same time I was inspired to create matriarchs, I was teaching a lesson on women's history to my students. Currently I am a teaching in a school where it is set up like a day treatment program for adjudicated males grades 9-12. During this time I was trying to help the students understand the struggle that women went through before they had rights. You would be surprised how this population of students that I work with struggle with respecting women. The only time these boys would consider that women deserved respect was when I mentioned their mothers. This is partly not their fault considering what they have been pre-exposed to in their homes along with the lack of information growing up in the environment. Their inadequate exposure began first with how many young males live at home with their fathers? Next, how many students have witnessed how other males in the community treat the women? Then there is the lack of respect for women demonstrated also in some rap music and videos. The student's worldview is an epitome of what has been modeled by other males and females around them. Poor modeling along with the young man's desire to do what they want opposed to what they are suppose to can results in disrespect of women by this group of males. It can also lead to the spawning of single parent homes which can be the root of many other directly related struggles in the community. When these young men do not respect women, they will have a difficult time respecting and acknowledging the efforts and achievements of women. Due to their warped exposure, many of them acknowledge women for one thing, their sexuality. The piece Matriarchs was inspired from my attempt to not only describe how much I appreciate the women in my life, but to explain to the guys that all women have a purpose other than sex, cooking cleaning, and having babies. It is important for these young males to understand that Women have been occupying important roles alongside males since the beginning of time.
Matriarchs
I like to celebrate all the women in my life today giving honor to the elders first,
Thank you for the given births that now populate the earth.
This act alone should be the world's greatest worth.
You should receive acknowledgement and recognition for your drive and ambition on keeping
this family alive and together under such strenuous conditions.
Pulling pushing shoving and lifting,
you were only absent to make the money but your love was never missing.
"This is a man's world" yeah I agree, James Brown R.I.P
this is a man's world raised in a matriarchal society where we probably gotta be no disrespect to B.I.G
but P.A.C could not have put it any better about the kids,
On how we live he said,"We will have a race of babies that will hate the ladies if we don't love and
respect the woman that raised me"
cause it was life that she gave me she was my lifeline since I was a baby.
Did you know that you are my hero, my number one my numeral Uno,
you never let me down you never let go of my hand,
you never gave up on life when you were too tired to stand,
in this land of disappointments and let downs,
sometimes you drowned in mounds of emotions when you thought know one else was around but you
always found strength in the lord while you were wearing down your knees on the ground of the floor
while you were praying.
What was it for? Us to remain a family or have a little more?
You are so important.
Not only to the family but to the success and survival of our people,
you've demonstrated this since the beginning when men and women weren't treated as equals. You
self-educated yourself cause teachers couldn't reach you.
Women didn't have rights, couldn't own land, or vote
But your strength not to give in was an extension of our hope
to make us into proud folks.
Who spoke up against inequalities & injustices.
All of this so our family could live.
We could follow our elders
Get married and have some kids.
I appreciate your will to go on
Your strength to be strong
Your love that lasts long,
You don't envision things not getting done,
head on you approach the task you and it one on one.
Despite the hardened storms you've been the rock in a weary land,
that gave man his place to stand even when he stood up and walked away you didn't desert me you
stayed, and dealt with life's obstacles & hardships,
your gift that lifts us into another shift of speed
when that's what we need to succeed.
I celebrate you today because you are not recognized,
or given credit when you are the one that should get it.
Your beauty, your aesthetics,
these were the energies that were kinetic.
it attracted King Solomon who was connected
with Queen Sheeba's genetic trait and became her mate
another reason our women are to be considered great.
The strategic moves that they made were for us
cause raising and maintaining the family is a must.
They planned carefully thought out for the long haul
Not for the down fall
But in the end it's what turns out to be best for us all.
You too are a part of this universe you are owed acknowledgement
For your accomplishments, they accent what we invent, so you compliment men when you are given
now we continue to exist on this continent.
Your achievements stand tall like monuments
Our success should not ever be over glorified
so that our victories don't overshadow your assist.
Cause you assist me like the hand to the wrist,
like the mouth to the lips, like the thigh to the hips
You hold this family together like bolts bond steel of a skyscraper
Like mortar to stone
Like the beams in homes like tendons to bone.
Vera we were all so alone
When you went on
But we will continue to live on the family tradition
So that your love won't be missing
Coming together today proves that we listened
When you shared your wisdom.
Family for you has been a priority before all earthly objects, it doesn't stop it.
The object is to keep the family together you don't let materials effect it.
Even when man left it
Our love is still connected
I celebrate you today so that others will recognize you're achieved and accomplished goals
I celebrate your feminine and masculine roles
I celebrate you for how you raised a family despite your urges to fold
under pressure. Your ability to raise the family and be a woman was measured
By those things that people thought would never be treasured.
Our children, our love, faith and trust, these are the intangible things that keep us,
Physically & mentally you've been abused
But you were never put in this life to lose
No male could ever walk a mile in your shoes
Even if he swapped lives with you
and he had to choose
a similar path, you've always made something from nothing if that is all you had
produced by a father but you raise the children as a dad.
Now you're left to use your intelligence not your heart cause being abused physically
and staying is pure stupidity this is when misery enjoys company
You can't figure out if he is try to keep me or trying to get rid of me.
The disrespect is blatant its obvious
He is it taking advantage if he lied to us. No! When you get over on those that you trust,
and those that trust you, you are not fooling them those you were ruling then,
you took their trust for a weakness,
and treated your own as the meekest while you were with your sweetness.
A woman was left with several kids
Why should a man leave, abuse & neglect you,
Is it something you did?
Was it something he hid?
Or did we forget to forgive?
Cause its always been a struggle to live?
We forgot about the rape of the master,
& the nurturing of the master's kids.
Then she had to care for hers after taking care of his.
Did we forget about accepting her role as a house wife?
When she only cooked and cleaned
We forgot about her starting a family and deferring her dreams.
The late night changing pampers and silencing screams,
of the new born while daddy became a fiend.
How can we forget when most moms became dads
and how dads became moms when it was time
to find him, it was time for him to grow up,
the morning sickness made her throw up,
the transformation of her body made it blow up.
You dealt with being taken for granted,
when you're the most important on this planet.
Believing you'd always be here because a seed was planted
In you, but still you continue to pursue life.
Our mothers and grandmothers passed on
to their sons how to love the mothers of our children,
this is the foundation we are supposed to be building
Translating our feelings
First they were our entrance into the world through uterine walls and their ceilings
Let our love for the females continue to remain revealing
Despite being men cause less than them are the ones doing the concealing
not acknowledging that we are stealing.
All their credit no recognition for their existence
we will fight through the conditions
so our progeny can follow the mission.
My mother, grandmother, sister, wife, aunts, cousins are who I am loving
Who said females did nothing when they are the first who we turn to when we want something.
We get it and start fronting when it's the mushy feelings that we should be confronting.
God who is the giver of life
When mom is the deliverer of life
Living life to the fullest makes us the livers of life
Thank you mom for giving us this light.
I don't know if you knew but I love you and it doesn't matter what you do
Stress can make us fell depress
But it can't defeat success
The strength in a women's chest
Can sooth a man when he hurts or feed an unnourished infant clanging to her breast.
This family has the strength to survive addiction, alcoholism,
Teenage pregnancy, single parenthood, illiteracy and prison
But as long as we keep given
and living life right, living the way grand mom Vera
would have wanted her family to be tonight.
The Inspiration for the Almighty
Many people struggle with not having money. Poor people are happy with it and sad without it. So many will take chances and risks at getting money however they can. They will take risk that will cause some to lose their lives or take the life of others. They will risk their freedom, safety as well as the freedom and safety of others. They will jeopardize their family's and their community's future. Some will do whatever it takes to get it. No matter the kind of person it is male or female, black or white, good or bad. They will do whatever they have to get their money. Many people will fall victim to the blinding power of making or obtaining money the wrong way. I too have fallen victim to this inescapable hypnotizing power. It was once my goal to make as much money as I could without any other greater care in the world. I too, disregarded the consequences at of what would happen to me or others around me at that moment. I was able to break free from the spell of paper chasing and praying to the dollar. You too can escape and be free from this tight bind once you understand that the power of the almighty dollar exists.
Almighty
You have the power to drive people crazy
Make women have babies
Make honest people turn shady
Maybe you could serve a great purpose
if less was worth more
It's the allure that people want you for
but more is everything to people who really mean nothing.
This something always leave people wanting
they get with you and start fronting
You got people thinking the grass is greener
Over you we've caught felonies & misdemeanors
trying to cop the benz coupe & the 7 series beamer
For you people have swapped their souls
Because of you children are missing
The jealous is snitching on comrades
You gave birth to dead beat dads
You got dads beat dead over the head because of what he dreads
He don't have enough of you so he can't provide no bread
No food on the table or a roof overhead
The only thing dad can spend
is time with his children
You have no feelings
you can't feel
the emptiness of an aching stomach
the highness of the blunted or the withdraw that's not wanted
and when they can't get high, they're reaching for the sky
to get a hold of the haze thats purple pills that's yellow green squares & blue circles
Mixed with syrup it can hurt you
It will make you believe your reality is a virtue
Your legal tender notes
Provoke MC's to quote
Slanders blasphemy's & fallacies misleading folks
My purpose is like Cornell West
I am trying to restore hope
And hopefully we will all see
Monetarily your value was given by me
You are not god cause too many days & nights humanity cried & died
because they strived to have you hold you
Possesses enough of you counterfeit artificial
Mistrials because you were given to D.A supreme & federal court officials
the case had nothing to do with freedom you were the issue
In 1930 your bloodline traces back to the beginning of capitalism
when my ancestor's blood was given
men & women were driven by the same thing that killed them.
Their free labor made you greater
in the hands of their masters. Later as a fry cooks & waiters
wages are minimum
men no longer work to get some women
Cause now you're the venom that's in them
That make the people believe they are winning
If they chased you in the beginning now you will become our ending
Because people don't worship GOD no more they worship you
The Almighty dollar the new father the midnight marauder who takes away our sons & daughters &
transforms them into followers of its power.
