Description: This excellent new book is actually a companion to the fourth edition of Substance Abuse: A Comprehensive Textbook (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2005). The editors and authors are nationally recognized clinicians and have produced a clinically useful book in the treatment of substance use disorders. This is a welcome addition to the psychiatric literature.
Purpose: The purpose is to "offer the field the most authoritative, clinically oriented information on the subject of substance use, abuse, and dependence, with an emphasis on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention." Indeed, the editors and authors have produced an extremely useful tool for clinicians to help their patients with these common disorders.
Audience: The intended audience includes all healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with substance use disorders.
Features: The book's 11 sections and 46 chapters cover every aspect of this field. Topics include etiologic determinants, detailing of the various abused substances, addictive behaviors, evaluation and diagnosis, a review of the numerous treatment modalities, management of associated medical problems, substance abuse throughout the life cycle, women's issues, occupational and professional issues, training and educations, and forensics. Each chapter concludes with a list of suggested readings.
Assessment: This is a very useful book for any healthcare professional. Every clinician needs to have a significant depth of knowledge of substance use disorders and this book is a step towards achieving that goal. I highly recommend it.
