The Summer Escape, by Lily Graham, is the story of journalist Ria Laburinthos. Well, not actually a journalist, but an obituary writer. She felt that, perhaps, she was well suited to this position due to the losses she had suffered in the past few years. But when her editor demanded that she be interviewed for a feature called when the best day of your life becomes the worst, something in her snaps. Instead of reporting for the interview as ordered, Ria finds herself on a plane headed to Crete, her ancestral home, with the voice of her beloved Yaya echoing in her brain. Without a plan, Ria is only following instinct. But maybe following and trusting her instincts is a good place to begin. In doing so, Ria meets interesting people she would not have otherwise known. She finds an awakening within herself that opens her to feelings that had laid dormant since the tragedy. But she also finds herself in the middle of a mystery she is determined to solve in order to clear the name of her new found friend, Tom Bacchus. This story spins a tale of a young woman who has suffered extreme loss which has seemingly rendered her to a stagnant life. In her final breaking, it is as though the shell has cracked and she is able to live once again. In a charmingly written novel, Lily Graham gives us rich characters in a beautiful setting. We pull for Ria and Tom to find peace and to find each other. And in an intricate puzzle put together piece by piece, the reader will not be disappointed. I recommend this book.
