About the Author

Mariano Epelbaum is a character designer, illustrator and traditional 2D animator. He has been working professionally since 1996 in various disciplines of animation and illustration, where character designs tend to be very expressive and original. Currently, Mariano works as an art director on several projects. He is always trying different styles and techniques.

Natasha Deen graduated college with a psychology degree, but her passion has always revolved around stories. She has written mysteries, action, historical, and fantasy novels for kids, teens, and adults. For her, one of the best things about being an author is the chance to slip into other times and worlds, and to be anything she can imagine through her characters. Natasha lives in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, with her pets and husband. When she’s not writing, she spends a lot of time trying to convince her animals that she’s the real boss of the house. As a librarian and teacher, I love that each book ties into real-life uses of technology and media literacy skills, such as online research, social media, and using digital tools. It will give our students a great place to learn and think about various media literacy skills, while also giving us a place to tie in important conversations and learning activities. And one of the best parts is that at the back of the book students will find the Cyber Sleuths Code which is connected to the seven ISTE Student Standards. The Cyber Sleuths are the perfect way to prepare and teach our students how to navigate the digital world they are part of every day, while reading exciting stories they love too!

Gr 3–6—Question everything. Explore the frauds. Keep the news real. These are the basic principles of Cyber Sleuths, an online community at the center of this new chapter book series that explores common online pitfalls such as false influencer claims, social media hoaxes, deep-fake videos, fundraising scams, and more. Each book finds the amateur sleuth characters exposing how or why false claims and hoax videos are created. While the tone can be a bit didactic and formulaic, the information laid out is important. Instead of criticizing or ignoring the reality of connected kids, this series sets out to educate them on best practices. Black-and-white illustrations are peppered throughout the short, fast-paced chapters, making this a good choice for kids who prefer short texts with quick resolutions. A glossary, the Cyber Sleuths' code, and a list of resources are appended in each volume. VERDICT The topics covered in this series are very relevant for today's online youth, making this series a great addition for most collections.
