The Sweethearts Project

The International Sweethearts of Rhythm were an excellent big band active during the first half of the 1940s. They were also the top all-female jazz orchestra of all time, making a strong impression but only a handful of recordings before breaking up. In 2002, saxophonist Kit McClure had her own all-female big band pay tribute to the Sweethearts by recording their repertoire and in most cases their original arrangements. What is even more impressive than the apparent ease that the modern band adapted itself to the vintage charts is that the soloists play creatively within the swing idiom. Carline Ray, a survivor from the Sweethearts, has two vocals along the way and among the key soloists are McClure on tenor, trumpeter Tanya Darby, and pianist Cathy Harley. This well-conceived tribute, although a bit brief, is a constant joy and a success both historically and musically.
