Wow! Where to start? Well.. this is the best book i have read on Tarot. Better than the bestsellers by the big names. It brought my comprehension rocketing up by many quantum leaps! If you look for reviews of the book it is 5 stars. I'd give it 6. It spells out how the Tarot is a System.. the basic essentials deriving from spiritual metaphysics... the numbers of the cards are not random! It is actually simpler than one might fear! So don't worry, Toni make it easy. Now you can understand why the cards mean what they do rather than pseudo-learning by rote. The elements and numbers give you the feel of the cards so you really stand in confidence with them. With this book you don't need to rely what some DWM says the symbols he put on the cards mean... its elementary! ;D although she does explain the symbols too! Toni is a Tarot historian and a warm and wise counsellor, judging from her writing, so i intend to get readings from her ASAP! She also has new book out Sex & Tarot which i review too. MUST READ!

This book is so far ahead of all the other 'tutorial' texts I have read that I can't help but write this review. I don't want anyone else to waste their time, energy and money on a so-so how to book that probably thinks Waite can be trusted and that one needs to know the Qabbala [or however one spells it!] to understand Tarot. This beauty is my only point of reference, other than the cards and life itself, of course! So simple a system I had never suspected. The whole Tarot now seems so straightforward and logical I can only assume the ones who mystify are liars or fools. You too can start on the true path of selfhood just a Tarot deck and this. After learning the numbers meanings and structural relations and the elements, the progression from fool 0 to 21 and Aces to court cards that she explains so well with many often hilarious examples from her readings, just seems obvious. How could I have missed it!? Never mind. She gives real history of the cards and explores explains most of the the symbolism but that is not why you should prefer this to other commentaries. Simply put, her system is unique. Sure, others do make similar or even the same attributions for the cards as for elemental basis and meaning. Yet none I have browsed make it all clear, thoroughly and harmoniously informing the reader of the whats and the whys, as well as fleshing out the bones with examples for each and every card, including reversals. All 78! A true system for even the most nervous and intuitively retarded neophyte. I bet a lot of old hands would be challenged to rethink. Bach Flower remedies for each card too. Amazingly good.

I have most of the classics of Tarot and read or skimmed through the more accessible serious texts on learning Tarot published in the last couple of decades. This little known volume [416 pages] beats them all hands down! Simply the best buy. Why? Well it starts at the beginning for a start. The Fool? No. The fundamentals. The basic elements and numbers that form the Tarot. Many supposedly veteran readers have built their ivory castle on sand! Numerology is so often neglected by the many 'cookbook' and gimmicky books for beginners out there, not that Toni Allen's writing is wasted on those with experience. There is much to ponder yet every card is dealt with individually and systematically. Once you get the feel of the numbers 1 to 4 and how they mirror to numbers 6 to 9 across the etheric 5 while realising the earth, water, fire and water within the whole 78 makes sense. Combinations of cards are explained, reverse meanings too, of course. The text repeatedly encourages ownership of one's intuition and this is one of this System's many strengths. At once divinely inspired yet precisely systematic. Most students learn limited interpretations by rote and miss the structure. 'All is number and harmony'. Every card contains the others yet some more so than others! The 7/7 and 21/7 events recently showed the firey illumination of chariots at 7 relating directly to the fire of 3 [7+7+2+0+0+5=21=3 ]. Toni is an astrologer too but she does not drag that into this authorititive wonder. Apparently she discovered the Wintle deck for those Tarot historians. She knows her stuff. Every card is brought to life with true-life examples from her readings and Bach Flower remedies suggested to ease the associated troubles. What more could you want!? Fun and serious, accented to learning and spirituality, with her own spread and Keywords at the end of each card to quickly remind students. The only book you need.
