About the Author

Jeremy R. Strong has lived in England and in Halifax, but now lives in the city of his birth and the heart of the continent, Winnipeg. Jeremy is happily married to Jessie and the proud father of their three children: Samantha, Quin and Ora—who all love to hear his stories every night. He is studying for the completion of his PhD in English Literature and works as a college instructor. As an academic, Jeremy studies twentieth and twenty-first century literature and film in its intersections with public policy. He is particularly interested in apocalyptic, dystopian and disaster narratives that depict the future through extrapolation and in any government policy that shares contact zones with science fiction narratives or their creators. Focusing closely on the human body as the site where the realms of art and legislation meet, Jeremy currently works with post-structuralist notions related to biopolitics and identity and has published academic articles about zombies and co-edited a book of academic articles about the apocalyptic: Imagining the End: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Apocalypse.

Loved this book! As Tiger struggles to save her brother in a brutal and unforgiving landscape, she realizes that the legends she heard about as a child may all be true. The mythology in this story is complex and compelling. Is this actually our world, transformed out of all recognition? What catastrophes could have created such deadliness? How have any been able to survive? Yet they have, and it appears that there is one who may be coming back to reclaim a lost world. Strong’s creation is wickedly beautiful, even when there are more things trying to kill you than to keep you alive, and despite the fact that trust and loyalty are doubtful. Boundaries are blurred, not only between species but between creators and created. This is apparently the first of a three part series. You will want to begin part two the moment you finish part one. The brilliant, fast-paced writing will leave you rather breathless. Tiger is a fierce heroine I don’t think anyone is going to be able to resist. I just hope she is strong enough to survive.

Jeremy Strong has written a richly layered tale evocative of H.G. Well's The Time Machine and Ursula Le Guin's "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" and yet completely original and compelling nevertheless. His prose is mature and lyrical, strangely familiar as it seems to echo the language of a beloved story that one has read, time and time again, yet, paradoxically, one is reading it for the very first time. This post-apocalyptic tale resonates on a primal level as the myth of the coming Starchild and the possible renewal of the world and unification of humanity percolates its way through the story. The true adventures begin with the journey of Tiger as she ventures beyond the Tar Garden with her loyal guide Sai in pursuit of deadly raiders who have taken prisoners from her village including her brother Tarren. As Tiger follows their path through the dangerous jungle, she encounters strange creatures who may be friends or hidden foes. Just as Tiger does not know who to trust, neither does the reader. Strong has created a version of the jungle that feels like a deadly, despoiled Eden after the Fall where wilderness has overtaken civilization and monstrous giants and twisted hybrids roam around freely. The first part of this trilogy ends on a provocative moment of revelation and potential betrayal that leaves the reader in true suspense. I am definitely looking forward to seeing what truths are revealed and where Strong takes his characters in the second part of his trilogy.

Did you read that synopsis? Did it feel heavy, foreboding and mysterious? Trust me, it is the perfect description for THE TETHERING by Jeremy R. Strong. Prepare to enter a world that feels unfriendly, deadly even as young Tiger returns to her village to find it decimated by evil. Villagers are slain and broken and many have been kidnapped, including her brother, Tarren. One old man remains, and it is he who will guide her through the jungle remnants of what was once North America. With Sai by her side, Tiger will face whatever she must to save her remaining family. There is something hidden in Tiger’s past, something that will change the course of her future, her world and those around her. A post-apocalyptic world will come to life, often savage, mistrusting and veiled in the unknown. Who will be friend, who will be foe and how will Tiger know as twisted versions of life dwell hidden in the tangles of this hellish jungle. Will Tiger find her brother before it is too late? Can she survive the jungle unscathed? What secrets will she learn on her journey? Jeremy R. Strong has created a suspenseful read that is layered in the twists of desperation and a journey into the unknown. Filled with an atmosphere of secrecy, the feel of being on the edge of something new, this has the fantasy of a quest and the suspense of a dark mystery. I received this copy from Jeremy R.Strong in exchange for my honest review.
