This Book is a MUST READ!!! Imagine that while living a very menial life at best, your entire existence is interrupted by a world you thought only occurred in books of legend? Further, imagine that you are told that you yourself are a part of this mystical world, and have the chance to be whisked away to the realms of all things unbelievable so that you may become a part of the grand scheme of a race that has been suspect of existence for centuries, but never aptly confirmed. This is the crossroads at which Jacob evens finds himself, and the path he takes will forever change his destiny and to whom that destiny is bound. In her debut novel, O’Russell does an astounding job at creating a stark contrast between the world that Jacob inhabits in the beginning, and the world that he is introduced to upon the discovery of his magical talents, even though those two realms exist one within the other. However, the only world that Jacob wants to be in is the world that includes his best friends, and consequently the not-so-secret love of his life, Emilia Gray. As Jacob grows into his high school years, he is now more alone than ever. His father has taken increasingly more jobs away from the home, and Jacob has had to acquire small jobs here and there in order to maintain what small standard of living that he can. Even though his father would leave him money at each departure, the length of his absence always outlasted the money, and Jacob had to fill in the gaps. This made him grow up more quickly, and decide that the only important things were to provide for himself, and to be the model student at school. His goal was to make excellent grades and gain acceptance into only the best schools, so that he could not only surmount his current circumstances, but so that he could be the man that Emilia would have wanted him to be. This is the life that Jacob had carefully laid plan to live. But just as the saying says that life is what happens when we are busy making plans, so did Jacob’s life take on a spirit of its own, and takes a twist that no one saw coming. As mentioned before, there is a delicate balance in this piece between one very ordinary world, and one mythical world that exists in the pocket of and sometimes right out in the middle of this very regular world. O’Russells composition of these two worlds is complete and believable, right to the very last detail. The amount of depth in which she provides to build such a place that pulls you in so that you yourself believe that such a story could actually be true requires an immense amount of talent. A talent that is displayed on every page of the book and should be recognized for the brilliance that it represents. O’Russell’s debut is one that will command notice. This first novel provides a strong foundation on which an impending series will be built, and I for one and on the edge of my seat to see where she takes Jacob, Emilia, and the rest of her characters on their journey to save the integrity of Magickind. I give this book five out of five stars. I genuinely enjoyed this page turner, and am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the next installment in The Tethering series.

Guilty Pleasure I wasn't sure I wanted to read another young adult novel about magic, but my friend convinced me to read the first chapter and I was hooked. I love Jacob and need more of his story!

This book took me quite a bit to really get into.  It’s not that I didn’t like it, it just felt slow.  The characters were interesting and I appreciated getting to know them but it wasn’t really grabbing my attention. About midway through the book this really began to change and continued to do so more quickly toward the end.  The action became so intense I could not put it down and I may have had a very late dinner that night because of it!  I really like the world and every single character in the book.  I think the only character that slightly irritated me was Emilia because of her back and forth behavior.  Sometimes the things she did made very little sense to me, especially when it came to Dexter, her boyfriend and Jacob. I was incredibly wrapped up in this and couldn’t put it down.  What I liked more though was how the ending didn’t feel like a cliff hanger.  It left quite a lot open to speculation and at the same time had a brief sense of calm. Perhaps an “Okay, that’s done.. What’s next?” kind of vibe.  Another aspect I really enjoyed is how it mixed non magical people with the wizards and witches, much like in Harry Potter.  I highly recommend this book for any fan of fantasy and magic as it’s deeply immersive in both. **Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for a fair and honest review.** Jacob and Emelia have been inseparable since they were in grade school. That is, until the day Emelia is forced to go away. She promises to return to him one day. He is broken without her and with the new of his father, his life turns upside down. Emelia turns up during the darkest time of his life with news that will leave him speechless. Can he accept the news that Emelia brings to him or will he turn his back? Can Jacob and Emelia be together once again? I absolutely adored this story!! I read it in one setting and couldn’t put the book down. It has quite a few action packed scenes that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The story line is well written and the characters and well developed. The author did a great job using incredible detail to describe the scenery, locations, and characters. It is a fast paced story as in the story flows well and is easy to read and keep reading. I have two complaints. First, the last name of the “dark” characters in this book are Wayland. To me, it relates too closely to another book. Also, the story line borders similarities with another novel of a similar story. The further you get into the story the story line is definitely different and it stands on its own. The author definitely has her own story going on but the similarities were enough to take it down one star. I would definitely recommend picking up a copy of this book. You will not be disappointed. It is a great story. I will be picking up a copy of the next book in this series, The Siren’s Realm.
