"I love this house Jerry, but can we afford this?"
"Yeah baby, together we can afford this" Jerry said.
Jerry had been my boyfriend for three years, and we are getting married in three months so what better thing to have for a wedding gift besides a house!! We were standingt outside the house and I was so happy and excited about taking this big step with Jerry. I kept looking at Jerry, waiting on him to say whether or not we were going to go for it.
Finally he said, "OK, then lets sign the paperwork."
I screamed, "YEAH!!!" and he picked me up and hugged me.
We rushed down to the mortgage office, we went into the office to the closing, and the officer said,
"I'm sorry, but Mr. Jenkins, but your credit isn't sufficient to sign for this house. My heart dropped to the floor, and the officer said,
"But, Ms. Smith, your credit is almost perfect and you can sign for it alone." she said. Jerry dropped his head and I asked the officer to give us a moment alone. She stepped out of her office, and I asked Jerry, "is this ok with you baby, I mean, I don't wanna exclude you so ..." I started. "Credit, how in the hell is my credit jacked up?" he said irrittated. "Baby, we will be married shortly, and I know you would never do me wrong, so I guess it will be ok for me to sign and you pay the note" I joked. "Yeah baby, you know I got you," Jerry said unenthusiastically. Something inside me made me feel like I was making a horrible mistake, but thinking about the money Jerry had in the bank, and the money he made, I was sure we would be fine. We waited until the officer, Glenda Davis, came back in, "are you guys ready to do this" she asked. "Yes, we are as ready as we ever will be Ms. Davis". "Good, just initial here, and sign here, here, and here" Ms. Davis instructed. Ms. Davis also informed us that the mortgage came with a clause, that every year a balloon payment of at least five thousand dollars would have to be made, due to the fact that we chose the ten-fifteen year option of pay-off. This made me nervous because I sincerely knew that there would be no actual way that I would be able to afford that, on my own. I followed her instruction and she congratulated us, gave us our keys, and thanked us for our business. We left the office and went to our new home. "Oh Jerry I cannot believe we are homeowners!! I am so happy, homeowners today, a married couple in three months, we are doing the damn thang baby!" I yelled while walking through the house imagining what I could put here and there. "Now I gotta take you shopping so we can furnish our new home," Jerry said. "Oh Jerry, you are so good to me, how did I ever deserve you?" I said while embracing him. "You deserve me and much more, you are a helluva catch as well," he said with a grin. We both laughed and locked up the house and left for the furniture store. "Get whatever you want baby" he said, "money is no object when it comes to the woman I love". "Damn Jerry, you sure do know how to make a woman feel good" I blushed. "May I help you?" the saleslady asked. "Yes ma'am, whatever she wants, put it on this card" Jerry said while giving the lady whose name tag said Julia, his black card. "Yes sir, come this way ma'am" she said while grinning so hard until she was almost laughing. I don't know who was laughing the hardest, her or me. I felt really good, I felt like the luckiest woman in the whole world. "Excuse me ladies, I gotta take this call," Jerry said while walking out of the store, cell phone in hand. "Is he an athlete?" the saleslady asked. 'No indeed" I snapped "why would you think that?" "Because we don't get many black people in here buying the store without a second thought about the price, especially using a BLAACK card" she said while rolling her neck. "Well honey, MY man has a BLAACK card and he ain't no athlete, he's just a hard working man that happens to love me more than life itself." I said proudly.
"Well I am sorry if I am being too nosy BUT what does he do?" she asked. "Keep asking all those damn questions and you will not get the pleasure or the commission off that BLAACK card, ok" I said while rolling my neck. "Oh my, excuse me for being rude, let's start with Living Room furniture." she said quickly. "Ok, fine" I said while following her to the Living Room section. Damn, I thought, come to think of it I really have no freaking idea what Jerry does, he stays on the phone a lot, most, if not all of his transactions are cash, truthfully speaking, his financial situation is something I am totally in the dark about. There were so many nice things in here but I did not feel right about picking things for our new house without him helping, "excuse me for a minute while I go outside to get my fiance" I said. I stepped outside and Jerry looked upset, he was talking loudly and looking down and over his shoulder constantly, he did not see me at first. "You better shut the fuck up and get my money bitch!" I overheard Jerry screaming into his phone then he looked up and saw me standing there and said, "What the fuck you out here for, didn't I tell you to just pick and swipe, pick and swipe, what the fuck is hard about that?" he yelled. I stood there stunned because I had never heard Jerry speak that way, especially not to me, ever. "HELLOOOO, goddammit can you hear, what the fuck is wrong today, EVERYBODY I come into contact with is fucking retarded!!!" he continued to yell and rant. I turned and ran back into the store, "I gotta go, I done fucked up" I heard him say into his phone. "Hold up babe" he called to me. I went into the store and saw my neighbor Janet, "What's wrong, did somebody die, did somebody rob you? What the fuck ... say something girl!" she yelled. I was crying so hard until all I could say was, "Uh, uh". "Girl!!!" she yelled. "Ca—can you give me a ride home?" I finally managed to get out. "Oh hell yeah, I just paid my bill, these shady ass bastards threatened me this morning so I figured I better get up and come on and pay one note if no more. They knew when they let me get this shit, I couldn't afford it, but they were approving and offering, so I was picking and taking! Ha ha!!" she went on. As we walked to the car, I heard Jerry saying, "Janet, wait up," "Come on Janet" I pulled at Janet. "Isn't that Jer-" she started. "Fuck him, just come on!!" I yelled. "Well damn, I'm coming" she said while we were almost running. Janet was an undercover escort. She had tried, several times, to get me to join her business, because she was getting too many clients. Janet ran, staffed, and worked her Escort service, she carried all kinds of weapons, and she wasn't scarry at all, she would go on any date, as long as the money was right, half before the date, the other half, before the date was over. I can't call her a pimp because she was her only employee, tax free money, she made a lot of money, but spent every dime of it almost immediately, but that was Janet, always the same. "What the hell is wrong with you and Jerry, you know I don't run from no man, damn girl, you gonna fuck up my image!" she yelled, "Now what's up" she demanded. "I don't know, I really don't, Janet all I know is he told me to get whatever I wanted and put it on his card, and he stepped out to take a call, I went out to get him because we just closed on our house, and I wanted him to help pick out the furniture, and when i did, he was arguing with someone about some money and when he saw me, he cursed me out, totally. Jerry has NEVER talked to me that way, NEVER!!" I yelled between sobs. "Oh girl, you need to find out what the shit it is that Jerry actually does, I know a lot of rich men, but nobody is just rich, there has to be a legacy, either they have worked by building a business, or their family is wealthy (we both knew that wasn't the case because all, not some, of his people were ghetto fabulous), or they hit the lotto, neither one of those apply to his ass, oh yeah, let's not forget athlete" she analyzed. "Well shit Janet, I don't know what to say, I do not know how he has money, but he sure does, and plenty of it" I said as we pulled up to our gated community. "I think your ass should stay here until you find out" Janet warned. "I can't stay here because we close on this place next week, and we closed on the new place THIS morning! I can't stay here if I wanted to! Damn, I just don't know what I am gonna do" my voice lowered. "Well can you afford the new place on your own?" she asked. "No, it would be really tight, I would probably have to come and eat with you everyday" I joked. "Yeah, or either you could come and work with me" she said with a smile. "Girl hell naw, my ass would be shaking so hard until a second date would certainly be out of the picture." we both laughed. "Well, here we are" she said as she pulled in front of my house. This is the first house I have ever owned, note reasonable, insurance, taxes reasonable, location great. This house was just what I needed, that was until I met Jerry and he wanted to have something that was both ours, but I still do not understand how its going to be BOTH ours when the new house is ONLY in my name. Well that's just something that I cannot think about right now, I just really don't know what the hell I am going to do about Jerry's behavior. "Hey, heyyy girl snap outta it and get the hell out my car, you know I gotta rest before I go out, ooh yeah, wanna come?" she smirked. "No thanks, I'm glad you were at the store, thanks J" I said while opening the door. "Anytime baby girl, I'm gonna call you later before my date ok" she said. "Ok, I don't have any plans" I said sadly. We exchanged byes, I got out of the car and went into my house, almost all of my things, except my essential things, of course, were packed. We were so excited about the move until we boxed things at such a rapid pace and he also gave away a lot of things, and what he did not give away, we were having an open house garage sale, Jerry simply said, "Don't worry baby, I got plans for us" Not having a clue about what he meant, I just went along with him, I guess today was the end result, he was going to fully furnish the whole house with new things. I guess I should have been more excited, but damn what was REALLY going on with him, I had to find out. The sound of the telephone ringing, interrupted my thoughts, Unknown, who the hell, "Hello" I snapped. "Hey baby, I called you six times and only when I called unknown you answered." Jerry said. "Six times, you ain't called here no six times Jerry, I JUST NOW heard the phone ring, anyway, what's up" I asked dryly. "What the hell you mean, what's up, you know what's up" he said excitedly. "Naw, I don't know, cause if I did, I wouldn't be asking you" I snapped. "Look baby, can we at least talk about what happened" he asked. "Talk, isn't that what you are trying to do now" I yelled. "No need to yell at me woman!" he shouted. "No need to yell, what are you doing" I choked back the tears. "Can I come home" he said, "let me come home baby" he pleaded. "Ok, come on" I said and hung up. Exactly one minute later, Jerry was walking through the door. "I'm sorry baby" he said as he grabbed me in a bear hug and held me until I had to ask to be released. "I swear that shit will never happen again, I fucked up, I did, but I will never bring my work home or on a date or anywhere near you again" he begged. "Please forgive me and let's move on" he asked. "Ok baby, I forgive you" I said. He grabbed my hand and lead me to our bedroom, "just one more time here baby, one more time" he whispered. I smiled and followed him into the room. "Thank you Lord for all these blessings, I thought, but little did I know, a blessing was the farthest thing from my grasps.
Chapter Two"Will that be all ma'am?" the saleslady asked with a smile.
"Yes, I think for now that will be it," I said with a smirk.
We had just spent $35000 at a furniture store and I am so pleased about the things we got.
"You got everything you wanted?" Jerry asked.
"Yes baby, thank you" I said happily.
"Everything" Jerry stressed.
"Yes baby, everything" I said.
"Ok good baby, let's go 'cause we got a lot of things to do today.
He was right, we had so many things to do, we had to close on my old house, we had to host the garage sale at the old house and everything we did not sell, we would have to move, someone had to be at the new house to accept the new furniture, we had moved somethings to the new house. It was a good thing that the majority of the items were still at the old house. We did not spend a lot of time at the furniture store because I had gone there yesterday and spent several hours there picking things for the rooms, I had taken pictures of the rooms and I used them to pick furniture that was almost perfect for the spaces.
"Baby, you saved us hours and hours, and I must admit, you have great taste, I liked everything you picked," he said while grabbing me and giving me a kiss. I smiled and I thought about how happy his compliments made me feel.
"Oh yeah baby, I need to drop by my office for a minute, I gotta pick up some files." I said.
"Ok baby, and while you are in there I will make a quick call," he said.
"Ok" I said when I get out of the car. I am a Clinical Psychologist and I have two jobs, one of which Jerry is trying to get me to quit. I work in the hospital on the Mental floor, and I have my own private practice which I have quite a few clients that I have grown to love and care for. I went into my office and I had several messages, which I listened to intently, some of which were urgent. I returned some of those calls, called in some meds, and made some notes in charts, and before I realized it, I had been in there a whole hour. I was startled when I looked up and saw Jerry standing there with a smile,
"You are a very devoted person, your clients are very lucky to have you" he said.
I blushed and said, "I try my best, thanks baby." I got up from my desk, turned off my lights and we walked out. I locked up the office and walked to the car, we were riding in the Range today, Jerry was driving. Jerry had bought me this Range Rover last month, had given me the title and had me sign it to put it in my name. Everyone kept asking about Jerry and his money, I was running out of things to say, because in actuality, I did not know what was going on, but today was definitely not the day to worry about that.
"What's on your mind baby girl, you are so quiet" he asked.
"Nothing, just thinking about all the things we got going on" I lied.
"Well if its too much for you, just take many breaks, and besides, you will be running the inside part 'cause I don't want you being sick and getting overheated" he said.
Damn, I really love this man and it seems that he really loves me, I guess as long as we aren't in danger, I can deal with everything that he has going on. We pulled up at my old house to start the garage sale, thank goodness Shay is here to help. The house filled up quickly as soon as we opened the sale, I was very pleased with the crowd. The sale was going good and it was quiet until I heard,
"Oh damn, what the fu—oh I mean what the hell is that she got on" my best friend Shay yelled.
"Shay, stop it" I whispered trying not to be embarressed.
"Girl I can't help it, that bitch is scandulous and somebody REALLY needs to tell her! OOH LAWD" Shay yelled.
Shay had been my friend since we were 11, she and I were inseperable for years until I went off to college and she decided to stay in town and work because 'she was in love'. The guy she was deeply involved with, was a horrible man that abused her, when she finally got rid of him, she went back home and is still trying to repair her life. I truly love Shay and I do not know what I would do without her. She is in nursing school and I really didn't know what kind of nurse Shay would be, because she was so loud, and blunt and even though I am not a nurse, I am in the Medical field, I know those are two things, that do not work.
"Girl, you should have let me rent this house from you, you know I always loved this house" Shay said sadly.
"But girl your new house is off the chain!!" Shay got loud again. "OOh LAWD, I gotta go before I beena said something not nice!!" Shay said while running off, I was wondering what in the world was she talking about when I heard,
"How much for this ma'am?"
I turned around and saw a lady that was short and weighed about 400 pounds, she was wearing a dress that was about a size 8, I heard laughter and I tried to contain myself, and keep my mouth from flying open, I could not say anything, I was just standing there with a nervous smile when Jerry walked up and said,
