You can argue that perhaps this book is about one particular issue, being gay, and one particular religion, or even one American town, but if you really read it, then you'd agree that the book transcends genders, religions, age and any town or country. It's about finding who you truly are and then having courage to live the life you were always meant to live. Brilliantly written, in one smooth move after another, going from sarcastic to poignant , from imagination to sometimes brutal reality, the book is a fast read (which is not always a case when you think of a memoir). It transports you to Nashville and gives you a taste of that Southern life even if you've never been to  Tennessee at all. The book makes you laugh or make you feel like you want to cry at times, but most importantly, it makes you think, of where you are on your own road and whether or not you're following your own "truth". And it makes you long for more, to review some of the philosophers and authors mentioned in the book, to go see a play at a small theater and imagine how it' was at the school play rehearsals,... And of course, it leaves you wondering how the author is doing now. And that is everything what a great memoir is supposed to be about!
