Jazzyfatnastees may not be a household name yet, but as the visionaries behind Black Lily, a weekly showcase for Black female artists in Philadelphia and New York City, the dynamic duo helped launch the careers of Jill Scott and India.Arie. Now, with the follow-up to their critically acclaimed 1999 debut, The Once and Future, Tracey Moore and Mercedes Martinez hope to attract the same mainstream acceptance as their Grammy-nominated peers. On The Tortoise and the Hare, the lovely ladies blur the boundaries of contemporary soul with an eclectic mix of Latin ("El Medio"), rock ("Compelled"), and En Voguereminiscent R&B rhythms ("All Up in My Face"), enhancing the arrangements with their expertly woven harmonies. With this daring and delicious disc, Jazzyfatnastees may finally have discovered the secret to success.
