The Trickster by Kathleen Nance

Long after she's given up on his return, Matthew Mark Hennessy strolls back into Joy Taylor's life, bolder than Hermes when he stole Apollo's cattle. But Joy is no longer the girl who had so easily trusted him with her heart. An aspiring chef, she has no intention of being distracted by the fireworks the magician sparks in her. But with a kiss silkier than her custard cream, he melts away her defenses. And she knows the master showman has performed the greatest trick of all: setting her heart afire. Mark has traveled to Louisiana to uncover the truth, not to rekindle an old passion. But Joy sets him sizzling. It is not her cooking that has him salivating, but the sway of her hips. And though magicians never divulge their secrets, Joy tempts him to confide his innermost desires. In a flash Mark realizes their passion is no illusion, but the magic of true love.

This book started the series but was the last book I read in this trilogy. Despite having read the following two books, I felt like Trickster managed to stand on its own, and I truly enjoyed it. Mark is a wonderful hero, both humorous and serious with a sharp eye; he's fantastic, and he is wonderful in this "pantheon of heroes."

A wonderful charming book. Funny and touching at the same time. Kathleen Nance puts a clever spin on the classic Greek fables.

Zeus recognizes the boredom that seeps through his mind. In three millenniums of life, Zeus has felt tedium many times. Usually this led to his pulling a stunt that got him in trouble, or more likely some mortal female in trouble, especially with his wife Hera who he deeply misses. When Olympus lost its standing and his followers and Hera left him, Zeus came to Earth where he has resided among humans, making a fortune at Jupiter Fireworks. However, now he feels a second emotion, guilt over the descendants of all the women he mated. None of them ever found true love. Zeus decides to rectify his behavior by aiding the descendants of his actions.

He chooses Joy Taylor, a descendant of Io of heifer and gadfly legend, as the first recipient of the gift of love. However, Zeus runs into an immediate problem when Joy¿s first love master magician Matthew Mark Hennesy returns home. He seeks an ancient tome stolen by Joy¿s boss. Zeus recognizes that Matthew comes from Hermes¿ line, leaving him to conclude the illusionist is wrong for his target. Adding to the mess is the fact that Hera has arrived on the scene.

THE TRICKSTER is a charming, unique retelling of the classic Io Greek myth in modern Louisiana. The enjoyable story line shows how creative an author Kathleen Nance is as the audience is fully entertained by the antics of the cast. Joy and Mark are an intriguing duo, but the show belongs to the Olympian Gods who gracefully walk among us mortals.
