CHAPTER 1 THE ENVELOPES ARRIVED DURING THE UNCERTAIN hours of Thursday morningthose dark, early hours between tomorrow and yesterday, between not-quite-yet and nevermore. It’s a time when the day is still young, still taking shape, and still open to possibility. The envelopes did not arrive in mailboxes or through mail slots, nor did they arrive with any sort of postage or return address. Instead, unseen hands slipped the mysterious letters beneath bedroom doors throughout the small New England community of Middleton. One might imagine that such a strange occurrence would create alarm and worry. Under normal circumstances, one would be right. In this case, however, the curious deliveries failed to raise concern because most people never saw the envelopes. People lead busy lives, after all, and the envelopes were easy to miss. One could even say that the envelopes were hard to see. In fact, of all the people in Middleton, only one girl who received an envelope truly saw it. Prudence Potts did more than see it, actually. She opened it. Inside waited what appeared to be a postcard. Its face might have been white at one time, but the passing of days had added wrinkles and spots, and shifted the hue to a yellowish-brown. A handwritten message remained visible, however. It read:Be grave in your search, and avoid having stones in your head. The back of the card bore more writing, golden letters across an inky field of deep midnight blue. Unfortunately, this additional text did nothing to explain the cryptic words on the card’s face. In fact, the sentence written in gold was a question. Prudence was eleven years old. She had a bob of red hair and a spattering of freckles that lay in reckless disarray across her nose. She considered herself a detective, of sorts, just like her dad had been. As such, she had a particular interest in questions. Questions were like mysteries. Both demanded answers. Pru was especially drawn to the question on the card. It asked: WHAT IS THE UNBELIEVABLE FIB?

Purchased this book to read aloud with my 9 year old son. Both of us loved it! There were many nights when we both wanted to read just one more chapter to see what would happen next. The story has many twists and turns - some of which we anticipated and others that took us by surprise. It is well written and the author has a wonderful way of crafting creative descriptions of people and places, which made it a joy to read aloud. It was the perfect book for us to read together before bed, peppered with fun, silly, mystical, and a few spooky parts, not to mention a talking squirrel. Can't wait to see more books from this author (hint, hint...)
Upon reading the title, one might ask: "WHAT IS THE UNBELIEVABLE FIB?" It is the question printed on a card that eleven year old Prudence Potts has just received. On the reverse side is a message: "Be grave in your search and avoid having stones in your head." No one but Pru can see the card--except for a new boy, ABE, who moves into town after the cards arrive. As the story progresses, it soon becomes clear that in the small New England town of Middleton, nothing (and perhaps none one) is as it seems. There is a world of Norse mythology mingling with the town, a mystery is brewing, and it is up to Pru to plunge into an investigation. But what really makes THE ENTIRELY TRUE STORY OF THE UNBELIEVABLE FIB an important book is the message. Pru's father recently died. He was a detective and Pru is following in his footsteps by conducting investigations, including her latest Sasquatch debacle that landed her in detention with her least favorite teacher. Throughout the story, Pru must confront truths (and lies) she hasn't wanted to face. This story is just as much about grief and fear as it is about mysteries and Norse mythology. And yet, it remains playful, light, and humorous while also still addressing the seriousness of deeper issues. Often children's books turn dark and heavy to deal with such topics but Adam Shaughnessy shows readers, writers, and children that it does not have to be that way. He brings the topic to an appropriate level and deals with it in a way children would. Grief impacts children in a much different way than adults. THE ENTIRELY TRUE STORY OF THE UNBELIEVABLE FIB handles this topic with fantasy, mythology, and mystery while tapping into the wonderful imaginations that children so naturally have. I highly recommend THE ENTIRELY TRUE STORY OF THE UNBELIEVABLE FIB to children, parents, educators, writers, and anyone who is looking for a good read. Plus, it will answer the question that is now at the forefront of your mind: "WHAT IS THE UNBELIEVABLE FIB?"
