The Trouble with Virtue: A Comfortable Wife\A Lady By Day by Stephanie Laurens, Alison DeLaine

#1 New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Laurens and rising star Alison DeLaine bring you two tales of passionate temptation…and decorum overthrown.

A Comfortable Wife

Miss Antonia Mannering has made plans that include her long-ago friend Lord Philip Ruthven. She knows Philip is popular with the ladies, but he has never married. Might he now be ready for a wife? If she could only prove that she could run his home, not disgrace him in Society and be a comfortable wife, surely he would propose to her. But when love enters the equation, Antonia might be getting more than she bargained for….

A Lady by Day

Recovering from scandal, Josephine, Countess of Mareck, has secured a second chance at respectability. And she certainly will not risk it for Sir Noah Rutledge, who's returned to London from the Mediterranean to secure a new business venture. But when Noah confronts Josephine and puts her secrets at risk, he stirs a most unexpected desire. With the ton watching closely, she must be careful not to fall for an unsuitable man. Unless love proves stronger than Society….

The Stephanie Laurens is a reprint from 1996-- I wish publishers would stop all of these unannounced reprints.

If you sign up to the authors web site, you would get email telling you the new release is a reprint. Not everyone gets to read a book the first time around. Some stories are good if written this year or 5 years ago!

I read Stephanie Laurens’ “A Comfortable Wife" several years ago, so this review is only for the novella "A Lady by Day." Josephine, a young widow, has happy memories of her brief time in the Mediterranean. She longs to live an unconventional life but is bound by society (as well as herself) to make amends for a youthful indiscretion. She is launching her two nieces into London society in the hopes that they will make better matches than she did. Until Sir Noah Rutledge comes along, upsetting her very orderly and tightly-controlled existence, awakening passions and dreams she long thought lost forever. I find the business side plot in this otherwise beautifully written novella a bit on the cumbersome side. Josephine has been making business decisions on her good friend and uncle Elias’ behalf for several years, ever since Elias’ debauched lifestyle made it increasingly difficult for him to manage his day to day affairs. When Noah returns to London to seek Elias’ counsel on building a shipyard, he discovers her ruse. He also uncovers her secrets which directly influence his own life. Characters from DeLaine’s other books—Captain Warre from A Gentleman ‘Til Midnight and Nicholas Warre from A Wedding by Dawn—make brief appearances and/or cameos here.  I’m intrigued by Pauline, Josephine’s bluestocking niece, and I hope DeLaine will perhaps write a story featuring this minor but fascinating character. This is a well told story about defying convention to live your own dreams on your own terms. Of course, it helps if you’re titled and have money to boot! I look forward to reading much more by Alison DeLaine.

Loved this story. Might had drug on a little too long but he was a good read. I have read all of Ms. Laurens books and have liked them all. I was glad this one didn't have as much sex as she has written in her other books. Loved Antonia and Phillip. Having a friendship for years and then love was a good story. The brother Geoffrey was a great brother and I liked his part and the part of the three other characters his age. Also I liked that Antonia didn't bend to Phillips plans and had some of her own. I really enjoyed this story.

My only request for future NOOK novels would be: Please be more careful with all the typos that have recently been appearing in NOOK books. It is rather annoying when one is trying to read a novel and being faced with phrases that do not make sense and forces one having to go over the same paragraph to understand the meaning as well and wasting time. Thank you.

I love everything that Stephanie Laurens writes. This novella of Lord Ruthven is a nice followup to a character we met in the story of Harry & Lucinda. Lucinda is a woman with character and aplomb.
