The True History of Paradise is the kind of book you can't wait to get back to everyday. I didn't want it to end. It is dramatic, moving, and best of all it's several novels in one: its unique structure allows it to unfold multiple stories. The main character, Jean, trying to escape her troubled island during a state of emergency, and journeying across the (beautifully described) landscape, is able to "hear" the stories of her departed relatives and ancestors. An immensely satisfying book. (I have an older edition, and am so thrilled to see it coming back in print! I will buy copies as gifts.)

i couldn't put the book down. the characters were engaging; the social situations were realistic and enthralling; the mood was taut yet sprinkled with enough comic relief to be entertaining. a nice weaving of the psychological tug and war experienced by several principal characters and this provided a rich understanding of the impact of race, class, and culture on the psycho-social development of a community of people connected by the energy of a small yet dynamic island. check it out.
